I've never had a fan fail, though it's possible. I'd check everything else first... valve gap, compression, timing, plugs and plug wires... a tune-up often shows faults that cure poor-running ills.

Fans are the same from 64 on. Very Happy

Remove the fan belt, and see IF you still have the vibration. If that eliminated the vibration, then it's generator bearings going bad.
If it didn't, then I'd double check the torque on the fan bolt, before going any further. It should be torqued to 95 to 103 ftlbs.

For what it's worth, I had a similar issue with my last squareback and after doing a complete tune up it ran fine with the vibration gone.

We located the fan noise using a LARGE screwdriver as a stethoscope....Fan noise almost sounded like a rod knock ; but not steady

There is a picture somewhere here of a stock muffler cut open. There are equal lengths of exhaust pipes on the inside.

A long screwdriver held to your ear can really help find that kind of stuff while the motor is running.

If you still had the vibration with the belt off, and then with the fan off, the problem lies elsewhere.
This could be as simple as a clutch/pressure plate, or even the flywheel. You're going to have to do some digging to find it.

How are the rubber engine mounts?

Is anything metal from the engine, transmission, or shift linkage contacting the body?
