I have a difficult time buying anything from a supplier that allows women to put rumples in the hood of a VW. If they have no respect for the car why would I buy their products? _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I would almost...ALMOST...say that ads with women in them make me not buy whatever is advertised. It does make me look briefly but to me, its a form of torture so I quickly move on. The same reason I don't frequent Hooters and the like. Torture. |

Chickskin NEVER sells a car part for me. I never shop for the two in the same place.
I never crave young American when shopping for vintage German. _________________

An attractive woman eating Carl's Jr. doesnt change the fact that their food is garbage. Fluff in advertising usually has no basis in reality and so it doesnt really affect how I purchase things. _________________ '65 1500 S [quareback]

That's nearly the definition of advertising. We're not special individual creatures. You, me, everyone is hard wired at a basic level to associate positively with the certain thing they're selling through design. There's a whole branch of psychology dedicated to tricking us into purchasing. Fluff works. Even if the food is crap. Sure there's variability in what may work for you, but I gauarantee "fluff" of one type or another got you (and me) to buy.
Does sex sell? Heck yeah. Does the awkward half dressed lady holding a bit of metal sell better? Probably. |

Saw this ad today in on the front page and was wondering if people buy VW parts based on ads? Just curious.

I buy VW parts based on ads. I even compare The Samba ads for the same item excluding the price. I think, "which guy is going to send me the part, as described, and in a timely manner." - Feedback helps with this..
When I was younger, I used to ask nearly the same question you asked and everyone said they are not influenced by ads. As I aged, I figured out the companies wouldnt repeatedly waste millions of dollars if it didn't work. I don't waste 5 bucks, do you? I think the book "Made to Stick", mentioned that half the ad dollars are wasted - they just don't know which half. Read it:
http://www.amazon.com/Made-Stick-Ideas-Survive-Others/dp/1400064287
Over the years, I have been back and forth on the topic of "exploitation or disrespecting / objectifying women" too. In honesty, I like half or as naked as they can get women in ads. (even though I will be sitting in church tomorrow). Hey, at least I not lying to myself (that I know of...)
What if it was my mom, wife, or daughter? I' m like, just like folks say college is not for everyone, I say staying fully dressed is not for everyone.
I might be hesitant to buy from an individual that is the type to place a girl in the ad but I will read it - Guaranteed! I will buy from an established company that uses girls in ads because for the most part that style of advertising is so commonplace that it is hardly noticed.
Rambling, This will be funny if It makes no sense later....ha.
I agree with this:

That is without doubt one of the most unflattering adds I have seen. I had not even seen the add until I opened this topic. Would THAT add make me shop? Definitely NO. And just to clarify, the poor girl is not bad looking. IMO everything that you could do wrong in an add was utilized there. |
