Thanks PumaGTe. It is a long term project for certain so I am fixing it to use over the summer and then next winter I'm looking to paint it. The pan is strong so no need to pull it off the body for now.

I just keep on working on the Puma. Brakes are assembled, Gas tank back in. Just a few more things to do and it's back on the ground and motivating.

Thanks. I finally got it out of the garage and took it for a shake down run. It does pretty good just a few little issues to deal with.

What exhaust are you running on the car? A stock one?

Could you make/post a video of the sound?

Cheers

It has the Monza exhaust that was put on the car when I originally purchased it in 1988. I will try to make and upload a video with the exhaust sound this weekend. I can tell you right now that it is a little on the loud side. Its okay for short trips but much time above 50 mph and it will start to wear on you.

Here is a photo with the exhaust. The chrome tips were rusty so while I had the motor out I cleaned and painted the entire exhaust with high temp exhaust paint. I added the Puma emblem today, it is close to matching the horn button Puma. It is also more in line with the 80's styling and way less than the Script Puma emblem from Purring Pumas.

I had a friend send me a bunch of engine parts he had sitting around in his garage. He got out of VWs years ago and now is big into Datsuns so I win Very Happy

He sent me a couple of AE cases one set up for a 2110 build with crank and hot cam, plus a set of worked 041 heads and other misc. stuff. Now I just need to pick up a set of 90.5 pistons, carbs, and exhaust.

I've been collecting parts and today I received and engine rebuild kit with H beam rods, lightened flywheel 90.5 pistons and 78mm crank. I already have a nice set of ported heads that have been worked up.

Pumas deserve a more powerful engine. I'll bet you'll be very pleased with a car looking that good and performance to match.

Looking good!

I know it matches the tan interior, but it just cries for a black top with all of the thick black trim.

John - you sound like my wife she keeps insisting that it should go back to black, as well. My argument is a new top would cost about $1500 because it would have to be custom made.
For now I am more concerned with getting body ready for paint. The paint is like a plastic when it gets hot and it is about 1/32th of an inch thick in places. Right now I am trying to figure out the best way to get the old Acrylic Lacquer paint removed. So far I have decided that using a DA isn't going to work because it gums up the disk in about 30 seconds. Using a heat gun and scraper works but is slow going and it takes as much time block sanding the remnants left once it cools down, not to mention you have to let the scraper cool down to get the melted paint off the scrapper. Today I have been playing around with paint stripper and it seems like it may work a little better but it is still slow. It takes about half the time to remove the paint from the same area as the heat gun band blocking it out is a quarter of the time. I had about 4 hours in the hood using the heat gun and the deck lid was about 2 hours.

I haven't added anything in a while, but I have accomplished quite a lot. The car is now in about a million pieces and I am in the slow process of stripping paint and fixing fiberglass. The original paint is so thick that it gums up sand paper in a heartbeat. I did manage to pull the body off the pan and strip the pan of all components as well as remove most of the paint from the top of the pan over the weekend. Once I turned it over I decided I would get the rest blasted.

Well the wife said I was working to slow so while we were gone over the holidays she sent the body out for media blasting. Isn't she great! It came back yesterday and I now hove some clean up work to do and a little more to do on fiber glass repairs then with any luck I can have it off to the painters by the end of February. It doesn't help that this is one of the coldest weeks in the last 10 years and my shop furnace decided to die. So before any car work can be completed I have to get it working and the parts showed up this afternoon. Should have it working Saturday morning.

What media was yours blasted with?
If it was soda you may want to google paint adhesion and neutralizing after soda blast.
