|
|
I bought this about 8 yrs ago for a 71SB. Thought it was an Empi shifter. Upon further looking last night I noticed a number and a VW logo stamped on it. Can't find any other marks on it. Any ideas what it is from? I was looking to sell it but didn't want to get rid of something important.
Thanks

The shifter shaft located inside the Chrome housing is in fact the OEM factory equipped shifter. That is why it has the VW stamp on the fulcrum ball.
Now, the Chrome base and Chrome outer shaft is EMPI. It was originally sold as the EMPI E-Z-R shifter kit. Looks like the wood knob is aftermarket.

I saw the formula vee stuff but it's different. So someone threw the Empi outer shell on a stock shifter to make it look nice. The knob is stone. Which is kinda cool, I may swap it to my Empi trigger shifter.
Thanks for the help! |

I my take heat for this, but the most valuable part of that shifter (only because of chrome condition) is the rubber boot. _________________

The Empi E-Z-R shifter kit was designed to be used in conjunction with the factory 1968-79 shifter

As usual, RareAir is correct.
To expand, the Formula Vee ventilated shifter rod is purely decorative. In fact, downright sadistic to install, as you have to saw off your factory shift lever and secure a coupler under the boot. I punished my '71 with one because it was naughty.
The Empi piece was functionally helpful for shorter throw and purdy! It is the best of those shifters in my opinion, because it is the nearest to stock and with the fewest parts (the magic is in the extra tall socket base). _________________
