This is how a Ghia parts specialist in Germany chose to ship the side trim, in a box 2" inches shorter than the longest piece of trim
Took a lot of straightening but turned out well in the end, I have complained to the company but yet to receive a reply.... |
Please name the supplier...they need a public SLAP for that and their lack of response. Add the feedback in the Feedback Forum too. |
I was giving them a few days to get back to me however vintagecarparts.de take a bow...
The attempt to extend the box with an empty tape roll didn't work so well and probably collapsed the first time it stood on end |

Arg that's very inadequate shipping! It must be a thing with ghia side trim - I had mine shipped from NZ from as it wasn't on the car when I imported it = pack n send decided to ignore my instructions to put it in a tube and instead BENT it to fit the box (some trim was bent 3 times to fit).
So I really feel your frustration. I'm glad you were able to straighten yours. _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

Unfortunately there wasn't an option to pay with PayPal or it would be cancelled by now.
Never mind it's on there now and looks a lot better than the missing trim! |

I hadn't been sure about doing any paint restoration to the car given its originality however the rear quarters had been fairly knocked about in the past and didn't really go with the rest of the car. Unfortunately there was also a little rust coming through (see brush painted lower rh...) so I had a few days prepping it at a mates bodyshop not 100% what I would find when I started digging.
Nothing but nice bare metal as it turns out, I love this car |

Roped my daughter in to flatting primer.
Colour matched the 44 year old paint as best we could.
Much nicer. The paint has been left to harden a while before flatting back, the wing tops and bonnet have faded/thinned through to the primer on the rest of the car over time so the body line we masked to at the rear will be getting the same treatment. |

Should of done this in the correct order I suppose! A few weeks prior to the paint I ventured out for the ghia's first drive, accompanied by a mates EMPI laden 69.
It could still do with a good setting up as full throttle often drifts on to 3 cylinders, other than that though I'm very impressed with it.

I never got round to updating this last year, after getting it on the road I started collecting the parts to lower it then around July got cracking.
3" narrowed beam originally done by Jon Rathbone around 10 years ago (this belonging to a mate & my 58's beam were done at the same time).
I bought it from him requiring a bit of a tidy up and a few brackets chopping to suit LH drive. I also picked up a pair of CB 2.5" dropped spindles.
All fitted up and the rear dropped a spline |

Ran around until November like this, it has a few little quirks but generally loads of fun.
One thing I can't put up with however is the ride from the urethane beam bushes, despite plenty of grease when built up they occasionally 'grab' so.....
Back out for some proper roller bearings and may as well reinstate the steering damper. |

A few more;
Eventually managed to track down a rear plate frame surround from the supplying dealer in Fresno.
A few additions to the interior including Empi New York sticker & 8 track player
One from today.
Thanks
