My current aircooled daily/toy is a 67 Baja bug, nothing too fancy, has a gas heater so it gets used year round. Also make for a good Fire road explorer and trail car.
Anyways I've been thinking about getting something different and more versatile but still fun and unique. A few weeks ago I found out that some people I know had theirs for sale, had seen it around town but never knew it was theirs. Went and looked at it yesterday, it's a 72, manual, still has the fuel injection, runs and drives but has been parked for a few months. Has some rust below the side windows and the doors but the pan is solid. They were asking 1800 then 1500 and they told me to make an offer and see.
Anyone here come from a Beetle and regret it? Seems like parts are plentiful enough for most breakable items? Not looking to make this into an off roader or anything just getting the urge for something different.
Any opinions suggestions etc welcome.

My Bug got totaled, and I decided to try a Type 3, which was a long-time itch I had. I wish I had scratched it sooner. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

My only regret was not doing it sooner (getting a type 3). Much more room inside, and they drive so much better. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I've had beetles, and they are loads of fun. Then i drove a 70 bay window and loved that just as much. But nothing, and I mean nothing, even high horse powered rear wheel drive big blocks, compared to driving my first squareback. It was a 1970 with a hack on carbs and an auto. I loved it, and gave it to my little brother when he turned 18. The next day i bought my 70 fastback and drove that to school (UTI) every day for two years, even converted it back to the efi from stock carbs because i loved that system even more. That car now is being prepped for my daughter to drive in three years.
Sorry went on a ramble, yes its much better to drive around in one then a beetle in my opinion. Nobody knows what they are, and that gives it a certain unique quality. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

Thanks for the input guys! Wishing I had taken more pics now, trying to remember all of the random little things I noticed it would "need" to get an idea of what to offer. |

That's what they were asking this summer and had no serious interest, so my offer will be lower. |

Well I sold the Baja this week so I've made arrangements to take a battery and some fresh gas tomorrow and see if we can get the Squareback fired up and let me test drive it. Wish me luck! |

I don't regret going type 3, but I've spent allot more time looking for parts and working it than I ever did my bug.
For some reason late model type 3's are harder to get parts for than earlier models.
I actually use mine to haul things with, so going back to a bug would be stupid. I've hauled everything from hay, engines, uncut oak, a refrigerator and pallets in mine.
They handle allot better than at least the standard bug. I'm not sure about the supper.
Good Luck! |

Lets put it this way, I have two Type 1s. One has a pretty hot 2110, the other is a Baja with a mild 2010. If I have a speed itch that needs to scratched and I can't ride my dirt bike, I take out one of my T1s. However, if I just want to relax and or have a long drive ahead of me, The Squareback is the car that I take. I even enjoy driving the square more then my wife's TDI Jetta. The Jetta will eat my square for breakfast, but the square just makes me happy _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Owner got it fired up and was able to test drive it a bit. It has some hesitation right off the line, looks like there's no vacuum line to the distributor so maybe that's an easy fix. One thing I noticed now that it was out of the snow and I could look at it better was the rust! I saw some around the side windows but it was also into the cargo area under the matting. So add all new rubber and some rust repair to the list, almost wondering if I should pass on it. Made the owner an offer and I'll find out tomorrow. |

Your baha was pretty much EXACTLY what I was looking for when I first caught an itch for a vw. Then I stumbled across my type 3 project and I'm pretty stoked on it. Seems like you can get this one for a really good price if no one was biting at 15. |

They accepted my $1100 offer and after spending another $120 on a proper sized NAPA battery I drove it home 20 miles without a hiccup.
So now I have a 72 that seems to run pretty good but needs some rust repair. Here's my list so far:
Window seals and rust repair
Vent window seals
Oil dipstick boot
Figure out what's missing on vacuum lines
Fuel filter and check all fuel lines (looks like some have been replaced)
Replace the front tires
Fresh air hoses
Major vacuuming and inside clean!
There's some rust in the cargo area as well but it all looks doable.
Here's some pics

If you drive it home it can't be a bad deal! It's rusty, but it runs. The '72 has some extra charcoal canister emissions stuff that can be eliminated for simplicity. There is a canister in front of the engine & up another under the driver front fender. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I have to agree with Mike. Not a bad deal.
First thing I'd do is get a Bentley (the brown cover 1), as you're going to need it for doing the proper timing of the engine, since it's still FI, and HAS the dual chamber distributor.
Going off your pics, it looks like it's in fairly good condition, and just needs a few minor things to be a good daily driver. Nice score. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Spent some time cleaning and vacuuming today and getting a few things cleaned up. I guess they smacked something and knocked the spare tire thingy off track at one point.

Did some more clean up. One step closer to being a solid daily. The other projects in the reflection......
