Been cleaning up and removing paint from floorpan, waiting for some parts to arrive, found this date- 04/1962 under the floorpan, would that be the build date or the date of manufacture of the floorpan, also found some writing on the rear parcel shelf, Polar Blue, wasn't sure before if it was Pacific or Polar, now i know, What is the main opinion- should i keep original colour ?? have seen a picture of an Anthracite one and that looks quite stunning ?? |

Although not from Zimbabwe, this turned up on a local New Zealand auction site last week, at a $131 it was a little rich for me but an interesting item a very long way from home.
Good luck with your car, it looks like you have a great base to build great things from. _________________ Rusty 61 RHD Karmann Ghia Coupe - Resto in progress....slowly

Personally I think Polar is a beautiful understated color! _________________ RIP HBB (1984-2009)

Just from looking at the pics - The paint looks very clean. Is it a possibility to maybe sand, and buff the original paint? _________________ 1973 karmann ghia - current, not the last VW.

Has had a few touch ups at some stage, paint is cracked in several places so does need a repaint, the more i think about it the more i think i will stick to the original colour |

A date-stamped/etched chassis!! In my 32 years of active hobbying on Ghias this is the very first time I've ever seen such a chassis stamp!
Glad you are staying with the original color Polar blue again. If you are able to post a photo of that writing on the body, as well as where it is, it'd be another fine source of authenticity. My '64 Ghia coupe was also painted the same color originally, though it suffered from a bright orange repaint from PO years ago. If my Ghia would have the color written in the same general area as yours, it'd be a thrilling discovery.
As to VWs from Uitenhage, yes; they made a dual-carbureted Beetle SP1600 which would've been a hoot to drive, or now even find. http://www.sebeetles.com/sp_bug.htm
In 1981 I had the opportunity to drive a RHD Golf (aka Rabbit in the USA) from the Uitenhage plant while working in Wolfsburg Germany; it was a 4-door model which had an engine that was not offered in Euro-spec Golfs- the 1600 carbed engine rated at 85hp. Euro Golfs had 75hp or the 110hp GTis; Euro Sciroccos had the 85hp engine as well as the 110hp. |

Awesome. I can relate with my 63 two tone. That is except for the RHD. Enjoy. |

Oh, my- that is VERY impressive! You picked an excellent time of the day to photo the car with the warm sunset. And you took alot of time to assemble your bumpers so they are properly aligned.
Are you now glad you stuck with the original color, as well as the two-toned roof?
So how does it drive? |
