Oil change, points plugs wires first. How old is the gas? If you don't know, get it out. At least change the oil. Who knows it just might start. Add the fan belt before trying. Good luck, nice car.

How long has it been sitting? I've had engines sitting over 10 years fire up with some fresh fuel and a battery.

Just thought of something. If it is going to leak oil it will probably come from the oil cooler seals, have a pan ready to catch it. Just in case, it makes a mess.

Yes, I actually did think of that one. I'm headed to the DMV today to find out about squaring away the title issues. If I can get her in my name, I just may keep her...even if it's a salvaged title.

Wish me luck Smile

Well THAT was much easier than I anticipated! I was able to get everything taken care of in a matter of hours and I now have the title in my hands. Once I took care of the paperwork at the DMV I had to go to my car insurance company and purchase a Texas Surety Bond. Cost me $100 and took all of 20 minutes. Then I had to go to the Travis County Tax Office to get the title in my name. Super easy and everyone was really helpful!

Now I'm super excited to get to work on her!

What are the odds this old girl might start? If I were to drop a new battery in her and make sure her fluids were topped off...do ya'll think she might turn over?

I'm also contemplating selling her and getting a project that won't mean quite as much work. I fear I've bitten off more than I can chew for my first time at the rodeo. Embarassed

If you flip it, zero.

If you commit to nurturing it back to running with love, it will already be running when you go out.

Drain and inspect oil for boogers, fresh gas, fresh oil, fan belt, and FIRE!

Right. Now that I have the title in my name I feel totally committed. I got super nervous reading other folks title nightmares.

I am slowly taking her apart now; piece by piece and cataloguing/bagging each item.

My learning curve will be steep but I'm pretty confident. Having you guys here to bounce questions off of will be a tremendous help.

Someone asked about the heater boxes. I've taken pictures and can post them, but are they of great importance to seeing if she will turn over? I'm going to pull the battery now and drain the oil (I can't believe she still has any in her since she's sat since 1993). I can manually turn what I think is the crank shaft? Hoping that's a good sign.

Another in a series of 10,00000000 questions yet to come.

So, all the seatbelt tags have 1968 on them. is it still technically a 1969 beetle? Built in 1968 but sold in 1969? Am I understanding this correctly?

My 1970 Beetle was built in November of 1969 and all the belts said 1969 on them. (They were known to be original too). The chassis and body number indicate model year of car, don't worry about other dated components that may have been swapped later... Good luck with that project. I have a similar 1970 Beetle in about the same condition as yours. It had been sitting since 1987 when it died and was later abandoned. All that was wrong was the ignition points wore out and closed up. I replaced these, rigged up a lawnmower fuel tank and attached it directly to the carb inlet via a gravity feed. Changed the oil. Connected a battery. Fired on first turn of the key, ran great! Later pulled the motor and stuck it into a different VW and drove it all summer. Smoked a bit, likely due to stuck rings, but ran great. Will rebuild in the future when ready to be returned to the '70 Beetle.
