I pulled another one from my garage. The other car was the topic of this thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=616029
This one has a similar story. I bought it almost 10 years ago and stashed it in my garage almost immediately and it's been there ever since.
Think I'm gonna let it go too for the same reasons as the others. Here's the pictures.
The story I got is someone bought it for their daughter to drive to college and when she graduated she upgraded and the car was parked in a quonset hut until I got it. Can't confirm that of course, but that's the story.
This is the worst part of the rust. Not even sure how this happens. Maybe some junk got caught in teh sunroof recess or something.

I love it. Though I like my 70 fasty, I really want an earlier one. To bad is not closer, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

The roof of my 65 Notch looked similar to that when I got it. The sunroof tray had rusted thru in spots too. My guess is that the drains got plugged, and water stayed on the tray, causing the rust to form above the tray itself, along with on the tray. Big job to repair, but the rest of the car doesn't look too bad. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

MMmmmmm... '66 Sunroof....
Some of us Fastback fans consider this car the Holy Grail.
Hopefully, someone will step up and make right on this one.
That sunroof is going to take a LOT of work to make right.
The rest of the car don't look to bad, for an East Coast car;
But, like all of them, I'm sure it's hiding some sins.
Let's hope the right guy shows up to save this one.
Those Top-Of-the-Mark Fastys are getting harder and harder to find!
Who is man enough to take this one on? _________________ Bus Motor Build

Well if he just wants it gone, I'd consider making the trip for it. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

I wouldn't say I "want it gone"; it actually hurts a little to think of letting it go but I'm making a big change in another area of life and unfortunately this is kind of in the way. I wouldn't be sad if I HAD to keep it but it would be nice to find it a good home. I searched for quite some time to find an early fasty and when I found this one and it was a sunroof car I was ecstatic.
I'll get some more pictures today hopefully. _________________ Type 1 - '68, '74

Well, I’ve got quite a sorted tale to tell but I spare all the details and just hit the highlights in a short version.
Quit my job of 14 years because I couldn’t stand sitting in a cubicle anymore.
Started a small business that does well enough to pay the bills (but no more than that).
Nine months after I quit my job I inherited my sisters 4 kids; to add to my own 4 kids .
With all that, even though I didn't want to I sold the fastback. Then I backed out of the sale. I just couldn't do it. A few months later I did actually do it and sold it to a friend. He had it for a while and he did some work on it. I bought it back last week.
We’re all caught up!
Here it is the day I brought it home. He did the metal work on the roof. It’s a little rough in spots but probably better than I could do. I’m just going to hammer and dollie the high spots, skim coat with filler and let it ride.
He also replaced the front seats with low backs and the rear to a seat seat with the armrest.
He bought a few other goodies too but I’ll get to those as they come up.
The doors were shot and he replaced them.
The front fenders are off because he Osphoed (sp) everything under there and I got it from him before he put them back on.
It’ll never be perfect because I just don’t take care of stuff that well. I’ve made peace with that. It’ll be a driver on “survivor” status.

Made a little progress on the Fasty. The windshield fell out due to a rotted seal that was likely the original one. Most of the track was in good shape but there was a small area that needed attention in the bottom passenger corner. The pictures don't show it but the area was primed and painted prior to installing the glass.
Here's a video of the process if that's your thing.

I still love it. I'm glad your going back to it. I'm building my same fasty for my daughter. Glad you got back into this car. You'll love it. Keep up the great progress. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

Good for you on saving this Fasty! It's in a lot better shape than the one I had. Good luck and enjoy working on it. Very cool! _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Thanks man! Glad to hear it's actually better than someone elses .
The early Fasty has always been a desire for me and elusive for a long time (in my price range that is). I'm glad things worked out, she came back home and I have support at home to work it when I can. _________________ Type 1 - '68, '74

Well, progress is slowly chugging along. Did some roof "repair" today. Mainly trying to get it watertight and if it looks better in the process then that's a BIG bonus! Had a buddy helping me. Actually he did most of the work; he's a former paint and body guy. I told him I wasn't looking for perfection, just get it sealed up and passable so don't judge his work too harsh. Can't have the roof looking too much better then the rest of the car will look in the end.
And the video.

Looks good. Nice work. But, keep in mind your primer WILL absorb water unless you get some paint on it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yup, got it. Had that happen before.
I need to do the rear window area too so once that's done I'll hit the whole roof at once. _________________ Type 1 - '68, '74
