|
|
I'm a newbie here, with an opportunity to acquire a 52 mg td vw kit car, road ready, with a clear title, for around $2,500 - $3,000.
it's about a 5 hour trip, both ways, doesn't have a top, and, could use some work.
here's just one of the first photos sent, but, it has had some upgrades since.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

Price seems to be inline with basic VW Kit Car, if its in decent shape (biggest question- can't tell much from pictures) and if its what you want, go for it.... Just take a hard look at it before throwing down the cash, old saying holds true, "beauty is only skin deep"...

as an owner of an mg v6 conversion, and, been through about 18 of them in 2 years, you're right, beauty is definitely only skin deep.
car cancer is most always hidden. I do have pictures of it, under, and over, and, I think it's probably worth the money.
there is interest in these cars around here, and, I figured I would drive it, and dress it up, then flip it for another one.

If they drive similar to a real MG-TD, then they're great for cruising slow roads. Higher speeds? Not much fun...

i have had a fiber fab midgi for ten years.
use it everyday, weather permitting.
price would depend on the engine and floor condition.
if the work was done well the car should drive fine
mine is happy at 45-55mph. |

there are a few small holes in the floor, in one area, but, the owner states that it has been cleaned, rust proofed, and, fiberglassed on both sides.
that's my main concern, at this time. it's a 5 hour trip, both ways, and, it has been for sale for a good while, with no takers, so, I see it as a 50/50 shot.
I may get there, and, not want it at all.

I don't consider the fiberglass floor patch to be an upgrade. It's a terrible way to repair a rusty steel floor. The metal can't dry out and just keeps on rusting, making the problem much worse in the long run.
Any time I find that kind of repair I become suspect of every repair that owner may have done. If you want that kind of car the price seems fair to me, but I would expect to do some major repairs. _________________ Brian

thanks,
that's the main reason for doing some preliminary looking around for knowledge, from the ones that know.
there are some other pictures that I need to post to further reinforce my concerns.
more pictures coming.
I'm also looking at one for around $7,500, and, will post it as well. it's on flea bay, right now, but it's fairly local to me. i'll post the link. |

Or make low offer, and IF you can get it, lift body off and repair pans and invest in wiring kit.... Then you will know what you have...

If I was looking for one - I would probably go with that one, unless you are not able to work on a car yourself. One of the big things is the condition of the grill and peripherals. Grill is what, like $400 and the bumpers are about $200 each. They are pretty expensive. The body looks to be in good shape. I really dont think the car looks bad nor is unreasonable.
As far as handling - its a VW. not an MG. If you set it up correctly should handle very well. Floor pans are not that big of a deal and the wiring needs some clean up. All minor stuff.
You want to make sure the engine and tranny are usable. That's where you can get into some $$.
I am going to be working on one that looks really similar this spring. Car has been sitting for 10 years or so. Advised the guy that has it that I will be charging him $500 to $1000 to go through the brakes, wiring and everything to make is road worthy and safe. If ou get this for $2500 and dump another grand, you will have a fun car that will get a lot of attention for $3500 about what you would pay for a 2000 Honda Accord......Seems like a deal to me. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Sort of what I was thinking, about a grand for floor pans and wiring and misc....

If that is the body style you want then your options are limited. It looks like that one doesn't need a repaint, a new interior, or new chrome work. It could be a fair deal. _________________

that was kinda what I was thinking. I think it's an ok car. I have a shop with a lift, work on cars, so, it wouldn't be anything really new to me.
the reserve is $5,500 on the other car, and, could get it for that price, but, for some reason, I like the white one better, not counting the money, even though, it's in rougher shape.
at least it's a running, driving, road ready car, and, can work on it, while I drive it, provided I can fit in it.
I have an mgb v6 on my lift, now, replacing the radiator, back to stock, heater core, adding the stock location fans back in with all new parts, wrapping the headers, replacing front brakes, and rotors, added a new front spoiler, and adding more stuff, soon.
here's my current toy;
the shop is in the background of the 1st shot, and the red mgb has been sold. |

I'm also a VW/MG sorta guy. I have a stock '70 bug that I'll never sell and my mom has a period built '70s dune buggy. I've had two other VWs besides that and I had a '72 MG B that I sold last year and I currently have a '64 MG Midget that's a pretty big project. In terms of TDs, I would sell my beloved Midget in a heartbeat to buy a British racing green TD replica (or a real one) because it's my grandma's favorite car. _________________ Fahrvergnugen/ far-fair-gnu-ghen/ Description of a pleasurable sensation experienced when a car and it's driver are in mutual harmony; A unique driving experience; Pleasure; Satisfaction; A feeling experienced by Volkswagen drivers. |

The cars you had shown in the ads are apples and oranges. The more expensive one has a VW drivetrain, but that's it. Whole different car. And just the real wire wheels are a LOT of money. Its really whether you want a VW that looks like an MG or something that is closer to an MG with a VW drivetrain. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

yea, I know that there's a world of difference between them.
the cheaper one, I felt like I could buy it, drive, and, fix it up, then, maybe sell it later on down the road, like I did the mg's.
the v6 b is, pretty much, free, due to buying, and selling, cars, and, parts, to get the funds to have it, plus, selling off the excess, after it, has put me in a place that I wanted to play with something else.
the cheaper one would leave me with extra funds to dress it up, while, the more expensive one would take about all the funds, but, it is a way better, more complete car.
I like the style, and, color of the white one better, vs, the tan one.

How different are these "MG"s than the Gazelles? I have a Gazelle kit and it looks like many parts are the same or very similar _________________ function follows form |

Personally - I love the wrenching - so it would be no question on which car for me. The original one would give you the opportunity to "make it your own". BUT in either case (and you have pointed it out yourself by feeling you can get the one for $5500), the return on investment is not going to be there on any of them.
Flipping a real MG is a hell of a lot easier and more profitable than pretty much any kit car. Even if you are 50-50 on doing that down the road, you may want to reconsider the idea.
This is what I tell a lot of folks - your desired end result should drive your decisions. Its easy for me - I dont sell any of the cars I build, but I will flip excess cars in "package deals" that I didnt want. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.
