Well, time to present my latest project. Got wind of a fastback my mechanic was wanting to sell as he didn't have time to do what he wanted with it (maybe because of the 914, 4 beetles, T25, 58 23 window Deluxe and others...).
Had a look at it and it needed a bit of cleaning up as it been stood still for a number of years and repairing a bad repaint on the passenger side.
This is what it looked like:
As we started looking into it, it turns out its a 1 owner (previous to sitting at my mechanics) car, with 75000 km, original paint, original paperwork, original keys with dealer leather pouch, etc..
So we tackled the dried out seals (Type 3 Headquarters where very helpful and great products too), the cracked paint on the passenger side (the original owner got the side scratched by a bus and the repaint had reacted and cracked), painting only the bare minimum and the driver side section above the headlight.
Heads were taken off to check (no wear in the bores), and a full service was done.
We are currently finishing the brakes but yesterday the car was lowered down from the lift for a little while to check the fit of the wheels and the suspension settings:
I'm in love!!!!!
The interior is also perfect!! Progress pictures once I get some spare time.

Awesome, fine looking car! Keep us posted!
Say, do Smart drivers always park fully on the sidewalk, or was it just a really good party last night? |

Thanks guys!!!!
What sidewalk? I don't see no sidewalk...
Engine is perfect, no wear in the bores and all the tins are in great condition too (even found the remains of a sticker (factory?) on the muffler heat shield. Even the insulation on the heater boxes is fine.
Refurbing the calipers and most of the parts have the original cadmium plating still there.
Gonna invest in some clear UV block film for the windows to protect the OG black vinyl interior. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

Wow another bonus you've got there buddy! What about the floor pan, rockers, frame head, inner fenders and other under chassis intricacies, are there rust issues to be addressed? Definitely a Volksworld magazine candidate, i may say! Keep us posted, buddy! _________________ '67 KG Cabrio (Mickey) ;

Thanks!!!!
Fixed a tiny hole under the battery and another one 2cmx2cm in the footwell behind the driver. Apart from that, nada!!
The inner fenders have some flaking underseal and underneath perfect Baltic blue paint _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

Converting to dual circuit brakes for safety.
Had a chance to take a pic of the fender well, the brown is the flaking underseal. Is the number something the factory wrote during assembly?

Damn, that's nice. The tire and rim choice really compliments it too. Beautiful looking car. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It's out of the shop!!!!!!!!!!!!
But needs the tank cleaning again as it gunked everything up on the first test drive (so we are moving it around using a ghetto set up with a fuel can). And its going to the electricians today for a check up.
Now waiting for my restored Blaupunkt and figuring a speaker set up.
Anyone have a some fat chrome trim for the rear quarter they want to sell? had to repair the broken one but it looks bad. _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia - Sold

Wow,
this is a truly awesome find! I've seen your thread on the retro rides forum as well. But I am unable to post there (not an active user)
Being a fasty owner myself - and putting a lot of work hours and love into it - I can only salute you for finding such an incredible original one! The interior and exterior is in awesome condition, judging by the pics.
The stance and wheels look perfect! _________________ 1966 Fastback "The Volksback"

Ah, lovely...
A bit of rake helps make these look so right.
Really good to see one being properly cared for vs. being left to rot with some hoarder.
Looking forward to seeing you drive the wheels off of it! _________________ Bus Motor Build
