Presenting the Arizona Bus Club's Jerome Jamboree XXV 2015 Raffle Bus. Celebrating our 25th anniversary!
Before us is a fine vintage German specimen born in August 1958 making it a very early 1959 model year panel bus.
VIN # 3787XX (on firewall under tank)
Body # 350820 (on bulkhead behind passenger seat)
Paint Code "SK 633b" (grease mark inside passenger headlight bucket)
Yep...split case transaxel, high tail lights, pre-M-Code plate and just sweet pile of commercial goodness. This 1959 Panel was generously donated by Stephanie and her family from Tucson, AZ and a huge thanks to Drew from the Tucson Bus Mob for putting the idea before the family.

We have begun working on this beast and will attempt to every Saturday until its done...barring any conflicting VW events or campouts. Some lucky raffle ticket holder will drive this bus home on Sunday, September 20th, 2015. This bus spent most of its life in the southwest but time, PO hacks and scavengers took their toll on the old girl...pretty much we have a shell to begin with and a few hacks, dents and rust to patch. There is a lot, a freaking lot of metalwork to do on this bus and we are ordering the KlassicFab funky green panels as we speak...hopefully, Gerson will come through again this year with donating some of what we need. Other faithful sponsors include: Wolfsburg West, Sewfine, Koch's steering wheels, AZ Transaxel Exchange, Bernite Motor Werks and many generous members of the VW community like you!

Yes, you can help work on this years 2015 Jerome Jamboree XXV Raffle Bus after all...it could be yours come this September if you are holding the lucky ticket. Our plan is to restore it to the original stock beauty and performance it had the day it rolled out of the factory. Typically, we will be working every Saturday with a couple weeknights and even a work party campout weekend or two sprinkled in. There is lots of metalwork to do so if you enjoy drilling out spot welds and throwing sparks...we have many fun filled days for you my friends. See our website for up to date work party information.
www.azbusclub.org

Siggy is allowing us to work on this years raffle bus at his Arizona Speed Shop (A.S.S.) that is located behind the Walterdome (aka Ponderosa Lumber and where Walter is stored...you know, the worlds largest VW bus) at 6425 E. Thomas Rd. Scottsdale, AZ 85251. Follow the alley along the canal to access Siggy's A.S.S. behind Ponderosa Lumber. Bring gloves, safety glasses, ear plugs, BYOB and any other tools or beer you don't mind sharing.

The AZ Bus Club is a bonafied 501-C-3 non-for-profit charity organization. We donate proceeds from the raffle ticket sales to several area charities every year in effort to give back to the community. We couldn't do this without the generous help from our sponsors, club members and the VW community we are all a part of. This is a big freaking deal! Who else on this planet is restoring a split window bus and giving you the chance to win it for $0.50? This is only possible because of the dedicated AZ Bus Club members, generous sponsors and the VW community who donate parts, cash, time and make the trek up Mingus Mountain to spend a weekend packed like sardines with 2000 of your favorite people all hoping to drive this bus home. Remember...you must be present to win.

There is a long list of items we need and besides the KF funky green panels there are many harder to find used items we are looking for. Please check out our list of items below and let us know if you would like to donate any of them.

RAFFLE BUS NEEDS:
(1) 15" bus rim
Rear apron aka valance
Front emblem
Radio block off
Overhead vent doors & mechanism...pretty much need everything including the cover and screws.
Interior door handles
Wiper arms
Headlight switch
Shifter
Donor area of firewall with gasket channel
Drivers side sled, the area just left of the engine with gasket channel
Interior rear view mirror
Drivers side sun visor, grey board style
Vent & slider latches for cab doors
KlassicFab replacement panels...too many to list but we need the most common ones so let us know if you have a spare.
More to come I'm sure...

This is a pre-M-Code bus so all we have to go on is the grease mark inside the headlight bucket and what is left of the OG color where we can find it.
The bucket reads "SK 633b" which is listed in the samba archives as a special SK color but no real identification of what it was. Best we can tell is it's an off white of some flavor.

I've got at least one vent flap ... and a visor to donate.
Visor can be as-is... or re-painted in the OG color (rollered... not sprayed) ... let me know.
Please PM me with your address info.
Thx,
E

I'm pretty sure I have a rebuilt screw terminal headlight switch in stock here that I would be willing to donate.

Let me know what engine size you are going to be going with? I will donate a restored distributor to match the carburetor. I did this with the Euro single cab a few years back....

Wow...some great responses so far, we really appreciate the donations everyone. I have PM'd you guys my address to send parts to. Thank you so very much!

Tasb, I believe Jim Bernite from Yuma, AZ is planning on a 36hp build but I'm wondering if this bus originally came with a bastard 40hp? I'm assuming the dizzy would be different based on which engine we go with...to be determined I guess.
BulliBill? Anyone? Know what was in an August 1958 built bus? Doubt we would want to do an actual "bastard" engine...didn't they come with no cam bearings or something like that?

Crofty, we would love to have the correct screw terminal switch...you've been PM'd.

Cru62, thanks for the offer but we already have a donor cab roof from Chad Jacobson to patch the T-Tops...there has been some discussion of embracing the T-Tops and making them functional then just basically "Jersey Look" the hell out of this bus...seeing as the wheel wells are already cut and all... Cool

Easye, the visor will be rollered grey with the divider panel our wood guy Jeremiah is making along with interior panels and wood wall slats in the cargo area.

36hp was used until May of 1959, then the "bastard" 40hp replaced it.

August 58 is a cool transition. Pressed bumpers with a late decklid. And a very uncommon colour on that one. Gonna be a cool bus!

If the king & linkpins need to be rebuilt I will do them.

I can offer pickup and delivery at the Kelly Park shows and the June OCTO meet.

If Jeremiah doesn't come through with panels, I can talk to Clara. I don't think she offers a t-top option though.

Our team started stripping the old layers of paint and removing the crusty bits while Roy separated the donor roof skin from the air box

Wow, looks like some great work going on already. So how did you guys go about separating the roof from the gutter? Looks nice from what I can see in the photo.

Rustybus: Separating the roofs was quite a chore. The 59 panel was a continuous seam weld around the gutter, squeezed and electrified much like a spot welder but more like two copper wheels pushed together and rolled along the gutter (imagine how a geared can opener works...but opposite). Pretty much just used a cut off wheel to grind off the top roof layer to salvage the gutter. The donor roof was from a 1967 and was spot welded about every 3/4" around the gutter, had to drill out spot welds and grind the gutter from the bottom to salvage the roof. (the seam weld must be an early bus method as my 1965 deluxe gutter was all spots welds too) The donor roof skin fits perfect along the gutter and overhead vent and we are seaming it on the forward lip of the "B" pillar roof / vent box support brace. I made some custom copper tips for my 240V spot welder when I replaced the gutter on bus and we plan to use them and spot weld the roof and gutter back together. Whew! Sorry, that was wordy.

Anyway, we have been working the last few Saturdays on the raffle bus and have the paint about 80% stripped and the cargo floor, rockers and front floor removed already. Gerson has responded that our order is in production and is giving us a nice discount on the $3K+ worth of KlassicFab funky green panels we need. The more we dig into it the more our list is growing...betting the east coast guys are not so jealous of our "dry Arizona bus" this year Sad
