|
|
Just picked up a Manx 2 and idea for this one is to make it look like factory or dealer assembled stock Manx. Did a quick search for off road radiales and not many small sizes and no match brands. I dont think Gates are around and th M/T's seam to large.
So any ideas or pictures of your combos would be great |

You know that there were very few radial tires available in the late 60s. I never recall seeing any being used on a Manx then. The common choices then were bias ply street tires or a "snow" tire like Gates Commandos or Armstrong Norsemen.
If you plan on using your Manx off road, the size of the tire will differ greatly from something used strictly on the street. A Mickey Thomson Mini-Mag is an ideal front tire size for off road
Coker sell a variety of (expensive) "wide oval" bias ply tires that could look great on a period street Manx.

Yes i am aware that bias plys were the tire back then. Just think few are still made looking for help from others that have fitted newer style tires such as radials. I do like the look of the M/T but thought maybe to big? Any pictures of them on buggies? |

Marc's Manx is about as period correct as you can get and it was a dealer assembled Manx.
This is mine with Mini Mags and widened rims.
Front tires fit under fenders well.
Hopefully this helps.

Vince, I love your buggy, so classic with the widened smoothies and big flake finish. One of my favorites! |

Andy, langan and Brian thanks!
I do not have that setup on all the time. I mostly run original Ansens and BFG T/A Radials.
I found that the Mini Mags rode a bit rough at highway speeds. Great for the sand though.
Brian, I will check on the rear size, Marc and I have different rear tires and size if I am not mistaken.

Langan
My top was made from a pattern off Bud Zeller's top. It was made in Wilmington NC and cost $900+ not including installation. I had to "adjust" my windshield and roll bar to have it fit properly. The best way for you to get a top is to have it made "custom" for your buggy. An auto top maker or a boat top maker should be able to help you with this.
You may be able to find an old used one to use as a pattern but will most likely have to do some "adjusting". Unless you have not mounted the windshield or roll bar which you can position accordingly.
The $900 seemed high at first but it has given me the ability to drive it much more often and has extended my season (here on the OBX NC) to about 11 months. (the heated seats could make it year round)
It has also allowed me to be able to drive for the entire Manx On The Banx event no matter the weather.
Hopefully this helps.

I like the Jackman 8 spoke. If they're finished in silver they look similar to the 10 spoke wheel they used on the P-51

They are much better rims than the five spoke variety...no drum distortion or any of those flaws.
I like 'em, and you have rubber on 'em, I'd roll with them and spend your dough on other stuff. They look to be at least 29s, which you might find kinda tall depending on gearing and power. With one of the many dry days you get in Washington's Banana Belt , run it up one of those steep dirt roads up into the foothills behind Sequim before you decide on a tire size. |

Hey Langan, I'm actually looking for a set of those wheels. Would you be interested in selling/shipping them? I'm not sure what the shipping would cost, but I might be interested. I have a matching set on the rear on a Mini-T that I'm working on. Would like to just add a match to the front for now. Let me know. |
