Appreciation for a fine Lonsdale or a Robusto requires no luster.

So to help out, I'm willing to take one for the team and settle out of my share of this "Twenty One"-like game show debauchery. I propose you give my Robusto to 60Ragtop, but at the very least maybe a toe rub for Volkswagnut is more than fair.

All I want to do is help smooth this over so we can all resume our busy lives.

You really consider 163,612 Beetles a "small number" that "snuck out"???

In the big picture of the 21.5 million beetles made, I would say 163,612 would be a small number.

But mainly my comment is just based on the fact that I don't think I have ever seen a 63 with a hood crest that i knew for sure rolled out the factory door that way.

Were there really 163,612 63's produced with a hood crest? Almost a quarter of the cars produced?

Yes. The hood changed October 1st - two months into 1963 production. Here's the Progressive Refinements entries regarding that hood, which was used the last 7 months of 1961 production, all of 62, and those two months of 63.

The "rules" were put in play AFTER 60ragtop posted 1962... the rules clearly stated...if multiple correct year "guesses" .... then closest month wins..

I win....... geeezz.. what grade are we in...??

For the nose bleed seats....

I knew I was a loser before I even entered this contest. Now all I want to do is watch a box of cigars get dispersed, along with a foot rub- not for the humiliation mind you, but solely on principle...

This really is for the good of the Samba at large- to assure that future "name that year" threads are fair, balanced, mutually understood and with the right amount of skin in the game (or gamey skin as will be the case with the toe massage)...

Though not a cigar man myself, perhaps 30% off some used unwanted things is indeed cleaner sounding over the airwaves than a foot massage...

As Gramma Hitestina used to say, "Li'l Hitestie, it is better to have earned a passed out cigar and pass than to pass out and get another's cigar."
I'm not sure if she was saying this to help me here, but...

Thank you Ken! Please save mine for the v-dubber who helps at your next garage night! Paul- you are good guy!

Sincerely, Bradford

It seems like this might be the latest thread that comes close to addressing day of manufacture- by serial number. Since I cannot find another that narrows my crazy notion about what day a car was actually built, I'm wondering if anyone here knows the following:

How many work days in a week at the factory in the 60s? 6, 7?

Does anyone know how long the work day lasted?

If you can , also- tell us the name of a book, brochure that contains such fine details.

I've for years just assumed a 6-day work week when trying to guess what day a car was built (in the obvious absence of a BC). I've only ordered a BC once, but it was not helpful for a domestic-market '60 convertible.

Thanks, Bradford

This method was proven fairly accurate.

NCdad wrote:

WOW!! Thanks for the precise info! How did you get that from the numbers?

simple math... Only way to really confirm is by Birth Certificate.

take the amount for that month, divide by days in month, gives a daily avg. subtract 1st VIN of the month from your VIN... = your # build for the month, divide that by daily avg. = date built. ( I made a spread sheet )

I did mine, and Birth Cert. confirmed.

Looking at the VIN SECTION for the 1964 year...
and finding my vin 5 819 453 falling between the last VIN for Sept. 1963 ( 5 815 300 ) and the last VIN for Oct. 1963 ( 5 889 417 )

October 1963 VW builds were: 74,117
with October having 31 days... that is an avg. of 2390 builds a day.

taking my VIN minus VIN of first build of Oct ( 5815301 ) = 4152 / avg daily # ( 2390 ) = 1.73 or round up to 2.
Build date should be Oct. 2nd 1963 for my VIN.

Just waiting on Birth Certificate to get back, then we will see.

OK! calculations were correct!

rec'd the Birth Certificate, and Oct.2nd it is!
