Hey Brian on the road probly not needed it would help parallel parking as you can steer with one hand and shift with other. Off road where I will ride should make it way better as there is some pretty deep and mean ruts that when driving with a rack and pinion can tear the wheel from your hands should also free a hand up fer shifting and tugging on the steering brakes and to be honest with the over sized tires and 6" wider beam it would probly be a fair amount harder than a stock bug and would like to teach my wife to drive the Baja bug...... awww who am I kidding its because I can and its frickin cool. I also hated the cheapo latest rage 1:1 rack that I had and the mickey mouse empi u joints and steering wheel disconnect. There was a lot of play when they all added up. So picked up a saco 1.5 :1 rack, a couple of Sweet manufacturing u joints and quick disconnect, hit the junk yard for a electric steering box out of a saturn vue and ordered a mudule of ebay to fool the steering box and Bam power tilt steering with no play
Here is the beginning and how to

I really like it both off road and on. I think it is one of the better modifications i have done to my baja. Seems very reliable and has been trouble free. Just make sure you use good quality u joints coupler , disconnect and rack etc . My first attempt at rack and pinion steering with a cheap Chinese rack and u-joints and NO power steering had a lot more play than when i used a SACO Magnum rack and Sweet mfg u-joints and power steering. Very little play with the good parts Currently my baja is broken. I broke a upper 2"x1" control arm It was a Latest Rage control arm. I think it was a quality control issue so once again i will buy better parts the second time
Happy Trails
