Probably at least 200HP.... They are a pretty tough box even without upgrades...

Maybe was a good way to put it.
Another way to put it:
I know guys that have been running stock type 1 transmissions and 1776's, 1835's, etc, off road for nearly two decades, no problems. I also know people can blow up built 091s with a stock engines.
Guess it depends how you treat it every bit as much as how much power you have. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

yea, but the early 002 is a bus box with 113 parts.
aka a mildly strong box with the weakest internal parts.
Run it until you break it. _________________ Wash your hands

Doesn't the 68 have a one year only part in it (a shaft ?) that is different than the other 69 and later 002's? _________________ pax

1968 was a one year only box, and would serve best in a 1968 bus. I would try to arrange a swap for a later 002 rebuilt for off road use. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

Use it and stop worrying about it while you save up to buy a better transaxle.
Depending on how you drive it may last longer then you might expect.
A couple of things that will be hard on it would be drag race starts and landing after a jump with your foot still on the throttle.
Yes it has a one year only pinion bearing and is not as strong as later ones.
It has no core value if you wanted to use it to trade in on a rebuilt trans. _________________ Joseph

both Laurie's & my buggies have later 002 box's, but i also have a 68 box that i keep as a spare. thanks for the info on the pinion, but the easy way to tell is the cast on trans mounts on the later ones correct? sorry in advance for hijacking your thread. I would run it as well, if it lasts long enough it could act as a spare too! _________________ pax
