Does any know if the lock mechanism from a 1964 Type 1 driver side door handle will fit into a 1966 driver side door handle? (square button on both) Trying to sort this out without tearing them apart first .... |

1964 to 1966 have the same door latch and handle. An earlier 58 to 63 latch will work also if you use the correct earlier handle. It would be a good idea to take both door outside handle off first and see if the inside latches look the same where the handle contacts it. Jan @ Blair and Son Auto Parts |

Reason I asked initially is that, outwardly, the handles look different: the 64 seems to be a 'cast' handle, while the 66 is the newer 'steel wrapped' handle.
So I guess I'll have to go ahead and remove the 64 handle from the door and compare the two ... |

So ....again I get to answer my own question. Yes ...the driver side door handle lock mechanisms ARE interchangeable between the 1964 and 1966 model years. The squarish push button on the 64 is a slightly different shape ( a littler more pointy at the narrow end) than the 66 push button ...but the lock mechanisms fit perfectly in each other's handle. The point? Well, if someone is looking to 'repair' a 66 driver side door lock, you can either swap the mechanism in from a 64, or simply replace the entire handle with one from a 64. (this of course would depend on them being of a similar 'build period' as the two I am working with ..I realize there were progressive changes made during the production runs ...) |

Working the other way ; Can I use 66 locking handles on a 63 door with the 63 internal mechanisms ???
I have matching door/ignition locks on my 66
The 66 doors are junk ; I got a great deal on 63 doors , can I use the 66 locking handles
Note ; on a Type 6 the window size doesn't matter _________________ 63 two fold rag

Depends on the latch used...
usually the answer is no.. as the 61- early 64 use a "Pin" style latch handle mech and slider handle.
From the Left
61-early 64
64-66 "style"
66 (button style)

In this pic you can see the different mechanisms of the handles. . |

One easy way to tell what style of latch you have in there is to just look inside the door when you have the outside door handle removed. If it's just a plunger, then it's the early style handle. If it's got two short horizontal bars going across, then it's the later style.

Yes, the '66 outer door handles and latches will bolt right in and work from the outside...
...but you also need to use the '66 inner door handle remotes* to make the latches lock/unlock and open properly from the inside.
*Mechanism that the inner door handle is splined and pinned on to, which operates the door latch from a convenient distance away with an operating linkage _________________ -Bruce
