Ok this is going to be the place for us wacko's to discuss the converting of our beloved Vans. Don't stop by to tell us it won't work and we should just buy a Syncro van. For the record I had one, put in a SVX engine and went like Hell. Sold it because it was a money pit and I got nervous every time I got the hots to take it really off road.

If you want to have a good, muddy, dirty time and you aren't well off steer clear of Vanagons.

Just an overview of my project:

Subaru power (start with a EJ22 and as time goes on maybe use the SVX)
Subaru transmission with reverse ring and pinion
Subaru rear differential put in the front
Widen the front tubes and use hub carrier / spindles from a 4 wheel drive pick up

Use the KISS {keep it simple stupid) system and have fun.

So far for the project I have the van, 71 tin top gutted camper. A 91 Subaru that gave me the EJ engine, the trans, the rear differential and many other useable and unuseable parts.

I'm real busy right now but over the next few days I'll try to add some links that I've found that well be a help and a insperation to us all.

Happy trails, Steve

Interesting, keep us updated on your progress.

Here is some eye candy to look at, not a bus but innovative thinking:

Let's keep the Splits in the (Split Bus Forum).
If you wanted to discuss both. I suppose you could move it to (HBB Off-Road).
Good Luck

Gotcha. Only bay's it will be.

Good links there guys. I try to find them all but sometimes it helps to have an extra set of eyes.

Tomorrow I'll finish cutting out the front of "White Fang" so I can get the Radiator fitted in and mounted. Remember this is a low bucks build and I'm a little pressed for time. "As in" I turn 70 in a few weeks and as much as I love long distance traveling in the out back, I still love adventure motorcycling, flying, sailing and sleeping with my wife. It well still be quality, just not powder coatings and chrome.

So far, and I well try to enlighten you on the cost to do this, I've spent $200 for the van, $500 for the 91 Subaru, and $250 Neutral Neutral to get a title for the Van. I have a killer set of wheels and tires on it (used $225) but they maybe used on my 70 pop top.

As soon as the Radiator is in I'll drop the front beam from the pop top as that is the one that well be redone and spread for front hubs from a 4 wheel drive. Then the 70 well get the disc brake 71 beam. Fair trade I think.

I've been playing with the wiring loom for the engine over the last week or so and it's about ready. There are some motor mounts for the subi to bay conversion by outfits like these http://www.rjes.com/html/bay_window_engine_mount_crossm.html but I'll just weld up my own.

That's all for now. Be back soon.

Steve

Page 16 or 18 of the off-road mods you have done to your bay has a guy with a syncro conversion and a watercooled motor in a bay. I think brian found the other two main ones. Mine will be number 4 i guess. Razz

If I was going to do an air cooled I would just modify the bus trans to do as he did. But if you want to go cheap horse power (like water cooled engines make) by the time you get your adapters, clutches, and still modify the bus trans you may as well go subi set up.

The cost to reverse the ring gear in the subi is about the same as all the other needed stuff if you stuck with VW.

For a low bucks build that is AWD and can be keep light you'll have a hard time beating a Subaru set-up.

I have never been one to consider the swap of a corvette, pinto, or a VW bus onto a snail speed Jeep chassis anything other than what it is. A Jeep. Too slow and rough riding for me. But to each is own form of happiness.

Also the geometry is wrong. Like cow tipping geometry. Sticking a bus on top of a chassis will be easy tippin'

Yea, there is no reason to not use the suby guts.

Here is an earlier version.

This is the same one in the ranwhenparked.net link that Tcash posted. They had it on display at the VW museum in Wolfsburg when I was there in May, 2013:

If I'd had a tape measure I could have gotten some dimensions, but I didn't make it into the Bauhaus Tempelhof store until the next day when when we made it back to Berlin...

What about cutting down a solid front steer axle, some coil overs on a 4 link.

Power assisted steering for those mudders.
