Alright I know I have been bothering you guys on here about an engine, but while I have the bus in the garage I wanted to fix some of the rust.
Well... turns out there is a lot of bondo. Now, I am not even close to getting all of it off, but I was lucky enough to buy another bay as a package deal. I chose to restore the 76 because the interior and exterior seemed to be better and for the most part I still believe it is better than the 78. And where most of the bondo and rust is on the 76, the body on the 78 is in pretty good condition.
I am scared to ask, but should I cut up the 78 or buy the panels online because I am not sure how hard it is to pull off and put on an entire panel. The majority of the damage is on the drivers side middle panel; the big panel. I will post pictures tomorrow. Thanks

In general I think you will find good donor metal is preferred. Better quality, better fit, and definitely a better price!

whats your hangup on doing the 78 instead? They are essentially the identical car, variations being possible seat tracks. Why cut out good metal when its in a perfect spot now?

But yes if you have to use as much original metal as you can. I have most of the lower 6 inches of a bus sitting in a room above my garage waiting to be used someday

Without seeing a pic I think it would be hard to make a call. Especially on the large side panel. Unless you're talking about welding in the entire side panel, you"re going to have to use filler ("bondo") for the weld seams anyway. Without seeing a pic, I might would suggest removing the filler first (free) and assess..... then consider straightening the panel (also free) and use a skim coat of filler.

Just remember, most purchased panels are not going to match as good as the original metal.

Body work and rust repair is hard, pick the best body and transfer all the mechanical stuff onto it.

Agreed, two full days of labor can move the engine, tranny, front suspension, plus a lot of other stuff over.

I will post pictures tonight and tomorrow. the 78 is pretty rusted out especially on the front because it didn't have a front windshield and was left outside. but for some reason the side that isn't damaged on the 78 is damaged on the 76.

What do you think about transferring a panel from the white one over to the yellow or is the yellow repairable enough?

yeah that's what it is looking like. The white one has minimal bondo though. So I am not sure what to do.

I wouldn't waste the time to cut anything out of the supposed donor, you'll be replacing crap with crap. That side panel doesn't look too rotten, aside from the dent it's relatively intact, either bondo it up again or just replace the outer skin with off the shelf bulk sheet metal, when you dig into the seams the job becomes enormous and you'll be sorry.

Once you start digging deeper you'll find far more sh*t that's even worse than on the outside, sometimes it's best to leave sleeping dogs be. That doesn't mean you can't use the bus, just don't get any dreams of a Pebble beach invitation anytime soon. Besides the rough ones are more fun than the museum pieces sometimes, what's one more scratch or dent as long as you had fun doing it?, nothing beats an action bus!

Yeah I have no worries about how it looks, but if it needs to be fixed or I can do it myself I will. I was thinking about removing all the bondo, moving the sink and cabinets from the inside and banging the dent out. I don't know how it would go, but I have it in my garage and it's worth a shot. I will just spray it with some primer after the bondo is gone and it is sanded. Not looking for a full restoration.

I don't want the 78 to just sit out and rust, but I have no room for it so I was trying to think of a way to use it. If I do move the sink out I might switch the fridges out because the 78 has an actual fridge where the 76 is just a cooler.

You'll be pulling the sink cabinet and almost the whole rest of the interior to fix it either way, there's no easy way to do it.
