|
|
I'm reworking exhaust system on my fiberglass buggy, looking for ideas on header design. Would appreciate photos to share with fabricator so we can land on a neat setup. I'll share "before/after" and reference specific buggies from which we glean design queues.
Thanks! |

Unless you're looking to set records in racing or have the ability to build one yourself, the 7614 header from CB is hard to beat. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

You can use a sedan el-cheapo header and just build an up pipe for it.
I got the sedan header free and this is the second up-pipe I have built for it.
Bends cost about $11.00 to $19.95 a piece from places like Mandrel-bends.com and you can get sedan flanges from CB Performance.
Then it is just a matter of cutting and welding the tubing together and you are set.
Finished and painted.....
What size engine are you running and which turbo are you planning on using??? _________________

Inexpensive exhaust pipe bends can also be sourced from Summit Racing.

...it's a 2180cc w/Garrett T3, Super-Flo heads, Engle FK-8, etc/etc.
Looking for exhaust to "not look like everyone elses", want the gear-heads to ask "who built those pipes, that's sweet", fabricator I'm working with is retired nuclear vessel pipe-fitter/welder that does only high end car pipes now at his shop, lots for race community. I'm trying to give him a general design queue from what I can find (photos) and turn him loose to build one-off. |

so you want something different from everyone else...but you want to give him pictures of something that's already been done so he can copy it?
makes little sense to me. If hes as amazing as he sounds I think you should be able to supply him with said buggy and engine and he should be able to come up with something that's never been done.
other wise why waste money having him replicate whats been done before |

Set the turbo where you want it with some temporary brackets and let him fit the exhaust to it with his artistic ability.
I used some flat steel and clamped my turbo in place and then fitted the up pipe to it.

Built this header for a friend's buggy a bunch of years ago. He has about 40,000 miles on it now.
The buggy is equipped with a 10 year old MegaSquirt EFI setup as well. _________________ Jerry...

"It's finished"! Posting update with photos for what it's worth to forum community - - - like it, hate it, love it - - - I know I like it, and that was the whole point of seeing first what "everybody else had", so I didn't copy anyone, but at same time could pluck design queues from various ideas. Thanks for the input shared, as we did gather sone thoughts from it.

Not bad, but I would have pulled the #4 pipe to the right & had more of it's length running along with the other 3 pipes.

I'm guessing that one pipe strays out a bit to provide structural support for the turbo unit maybe? Also see some oil lines and some other hardware mounted low on the left that might have required a compromise. |

More than likely it's trying for equal length.
My guess he has $400-$600 in the header if he had to pay for labor and parts.......or more. _________________

Yeah, I suppose #4 is pretty close to the turbo unit on that side. Maybe not enough room for that length underneath and around the back? Seems like if it was a common problem rather than a design choice, more would look like that. Yours is nice and compact. |

Equal length aspect could be easily solvable by running #4 to the right.

Thanks for comments guys, I'll try to answer the questions:
= #4 was by design/intentional swing to left, adds interest
= overall design thought was "semi-intestinal" look
= equal length was also a goal
= maybe $5 bills if you had to purchase it; but friend did cut/welding & used bends from his pile of parts; I only had to buy flanges & collector, so about $1 bill for me
= loud...depends on perspective & what you consider load...it has a sweet thump & gets your attention, but not overbearing on drives...maybe with good set of PC speakers you can get a sense of it...
