|
|
Yahoo article, and it's a list so I do not add much weight to it, but thought It might spur some of the hardcore travelers and campers to list their best and worst park experiences, the author of this one seems to have a reptile as in snake phobia. I think some parks should be for the benefit of the wildlife and not necessarily human visitors.

My list starts with the ones that were closed when I got there.
I learned first hand how Clark W. felt when he pulled up to Walley World
Make sure the GOV isn't closed first. |

My son and I drove out to a remote national forest campground during the "shutdown", and they had actually sent a ranger clear out there to tape off the "iron ranger" fee collector and post a sign that the campground was closed. This is a remote campground with no services and a pit toilet. I would have gladly paid if they hadn't taped the thing up, but there was no way in hell I wasn't camping as planned. We certainly were not alone either.
I understand budgets and what not, but when they do stupid $h1t just to prove a point, it pisses me off. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Dylan - agree. I had a friend on vacation in Kali who was confronted by orange cones when he wanted to pull into a mere scenic overlook during that power festival. Later he saw a patrol car blocking one. Utah opened the parks back up before the GOV did We drove into Zion just as it was happening! Free entry and no crowds!
My worst experience at a NP? None! I enjoy my short vacations immensely... Lots of little stamps in my NP passport
Oh wait, here's one: http://zionpark.org/product/zion-subway-puzzle/ this puzzle sucks. It took us longer than it should have because about 1/4 of the pieces are the same color. If anyone wants it, they can have it... _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

It took you until #5 to figure that out?
His first "fun fact" that 3 out of 4 visitors contract West Nile virus was a dead give away to his idiocy.
Obviously when some people think of National Parks they think of tour buses, amenities, and road side views. I rather like the desolate parks with subtle beauty and rough environments. Snakes are great for keeping idiots like that away as well. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

Yes, written by someone with no concept of the mission of National Parks and an absence of appreciation of wildness and diversity.
He should be very happy on, say, the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland. |

We invited some neighbors to Yosemite with us one year since we had an extra site. We knew they didn't get out much, so we thought it might be a good experience for them and their kids. Then after getting there we found out their two teenage kids were both disappointed that there weren't any rides. They actually thought it was an amusement park.
It absolutely amazes me how distant most people are from nature. _________________ Going to where the grass is bluer...

the solution is to take kids out to visit nature - there are several programs for kids in the inner city
the National Parks have always had a tension between enjoyment and recreation vs. preservation - that started even before the NPS was founded |

If you had to pick the worst NP that you've been to, what would it be? I haven't been to even half of the NPs, but my least favorite one I visisted is the Black Canyon of Gunnison in central CO - it would be pretty amazing just about anywhere else, but given all the cool surrounding areas, Black Canyon is kinda lame - just a peaceful chunk of high plateau on the edge of a big hole. _________________ Wish List:

We live in the information age where everything you want to know is right at your finger tips.
If you go on a trip without doing a little simple research to find out what to expect when you get there, then you are just a moron!
Complain about mosquitoes in a swamp or heat in Death Valley? How the heck did these people ever get a job as a journalist? _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

That was last year, actually. And I got caught in a blizzard. In November. In Death Valley. The D.V. is a m'f'ing desert. How can there be a blizzard in the desert? I couldn't "chain up", so I had to take a 200 mile detour.
But, the good news--------it cost me zero in Park fees since I always carry my
National Parks "Senior Pass". |
