So i got a set of sprint-stars over Christmas in hopes of putting them on my super beetle.
The back's went on fine but the front drums had an odd extra ring on them that made them too big for the wheel to go over the hub.
I got a new set of drums that don't have this so hopefully it will fix the issue.
The extra ring made it to a stock wheel basically snaps on to the hub, it is the perfect size for the stock wheel.
Anybody seen this before? I talked to a couple friends and neither of them have ever worked on a beetle that had it. |

Its called a hubcentric ring and factory discs and drums had them from 73.
Its to take some of the load off the wheel bolts and better center the wheel. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Yep, this was the factories response to minimize the chronic super beetle shimmy. I mean, we had this issue when these cars were still under warranty. I wonder if all the replacement drums have this ring. Possibly, a machine shop can cut that ring off. This is my opinion but I don't think that ring fixed anything as we still had the shimmy issue until the aftermarket offered better components (urethane bushing) to us.
Hope this helps, Bill. |

Well, welcome back! Joel and myself been chomping at the bit waiting for you. Kidding aside, watch the quality of the bearings you buy. China stuff is being problematic. What's up with the original stuff? Is your car lowered? I've had friends run 185/70 and 195/65 15 tires on the front of these cars.

I'm running 195/65/15's right now. rub like crazy with the new drums on.
I may just machine the ring off and stick with these drums, instead of spending 300 bucks on tires and a different bearing set.
Car isn't lowered but I'm considering some 1" lowering coil overs. |

Many OE drums and disks have that.
You don't need to take it off the car, just slice it off with an angle grinder and cutoff wheel. Let it rotate as you go; it's easy! |

What rubs like crazy? And where? Something doesn't sound correct here. |

So have you got the wheels bolted on even though the hubcentric ring is holding the wheel out?
I wouldn't even roll the car in the driveway like that much less drive it on the road,
It just needs to be machined off or if your feeling brave grind it off like modok said _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

No I have the stock wheels on currently.
It crossed my mind, but I sort of like being alive. |
