|
|
Hey Guys,
I have a real nice '51 crotch cooler split that was restored by the previous owner. The car is numbers matching with the body and pan, not the motor. It sports a 36hp in it now. I plan on finding a good 25hp motor, but until then I wanted to make the 36hp motor look more like a 25hp motor.
I have the "T" air cleaner, and a split fuel pump. I have a seamed fan shroud, need to find some pulleys, dizzy, carb, etc.
Is this all doable with a 36hp? The tins I will just keep what I have from the 36hp and paint em up or powder coat them, just thought changing the shroud.
Any input would be helpful.
Thanks guys!

Take the T-cleaner, the split pump and the seamed shrout you have. Find a split fuel line a D regulator, a split distributor with the flat cap, and a split carb and it will look quite good.
It all works with the 36 HP engine. Not in perfect harmony but it runs OK. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Ah, sounds good that is what I figured. The 383 dizzy is ok in a 36hp?
This is what I have in there now

Well, it was not made for it. But it works quite well on it.
You might loose the one or the other HP at certain revs but all in all it performs well.
A big nut generator would also be good then for the look. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Pre '55 oil filler, cloth ignition wires & spark plug wire tube will all help with 25hp style cosmetics. And Black out that coil too |
Oh yes, you are right. I forgot about the wire tube.
And of course the oil filler and the coil.
Using a black one might do it while finding a star coil can be hard.
Damned, there is a lot to change just for the fake split look. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Theoretical yes.
But that is not as eye-catching as the other parts.
A not toothed belt would be good. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Congratulations on having your car pictured in Hot VWs this month, Chris.
That car didn't by chance come down from Ontario, Canada, did it?
Edit: Spotted your classified ad. It's not the car I was thinking of. Still very nice. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

i have some questions for the experts:
Will a square-headed 36hp (referred to as a 30hp in Europe) oil cooler work inside a 24,5 hp (25 hp in Europe) fan shroud without problems? (interference with fan housing, fitment of oil lines, effectiveness of cooling capacity etcetera)
Or will a 25 hp fan shroud only work with a dome head oil cooler?
And, if a square headed oil cooler fits a 24,5 hp fan shroud without modifications, would the square head model cool the engine better than the dome head oil cooler?
What is the reason that VW switched from dome head to square head model oil cooler (that's not clear to me at all, if they are fully interchangeable)?
thanks in advance! _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

yes it will fit. The inside dimensions of a 36hp shroud are pretty much the same as a seamed shroud. The 36hp shrouds are easier and cheaper to make because they created the flange on the back to join the two pieces.
I don't know if it will cool any better. I think the square top was stronger and less prone to cracking than the dome top. _________________ Chris
