Ok, I did this before but back then my batwing was much better shape. this was submerged in the oil and dirt at least 30 years and that is face down. There was even horn button on it , but only i was able to salvage is metal button ring.

This started as joke as i didn't had any illusion that it might actually work ( i was thinking to hang it as wall art) but as I progressed i realized that this silicone is VERY good for purpose.

Pictures are crap, at least first ones, sorry.

Now, first I removed steering column and easy detached remaining parts of the puzzle Smile

what remained was crappy rusted wire. I removed all chips rust and cleaned what was rest of it, then used "Wurth" rust converter on it.

This way i learned that batwing şoft material is definitely a rubber. So I used hard bonding silicone to attach puzzle parts back on wheel wire.

I can strongly recommend to all that need right material to fill hair cracks on the batwing to use this or similar kind of silicone because it is very strong bonding and filling material but rubberish (400% stretching ) so it definitely wont crack ever.

This is only to be used to fill cracks because it cannot be sanded . I have to think best solution to use to sculptor missing parts.

More pictures as i progress.

Don't you think it would be better if you sandblasted the core first?

Not necessary. It would be nice though.

I cleaned it with wire brush on grinder , so there was no rust on it ( there is a two pictures -one while removing soft parts and rust and another after cleaning and Wurth rust converter application).

And it started as a joke anyway Wink

Not born yet. Anyway it is a very harsh diagnose -dead born!! I mean it will last at least as all other solutions so why do you think so? I disagree.

Why? because as I understand (using logic not seen in practice) bondo will crack as different materials will react different in temperature oscillations, but this is very strong bonding sealant and it can stretch up to 400%. so why it will crack?

He does not mean it will crack. He means, you will see the places of fracture through the paint (provided that you plan to paint it).

if it cracks again it can be used as wall art.
the only thing i'm concerned about is grabbing it firm at critical times.. not to end up with pieces in hand. and of course, safety.

any saved old part is worth the work if done right.

If you are going to use it without completely restoring it it will probably be fine. The thing about rust converters is that they don't really work all that well under a finished surface. They slow the rust down but it will still grow and that is what will eventually pop the pieces off. I would have had it sand blasted first to make sure every bit of the rust was gone then painted it with a rust inhibiting primer.

Time to move on.

Continued with 2component epoxy putty, brand is BISON and it is called epoxy repair . This batwing will come to life at the end, and who would thought that at the beginning? Me not.

Putty is clay like and it hardens in 5 minutes .

Very easy for sanding and it fills nice.

I also have horn button base, spring and (not so) chrome ring , also have push button somewhere. Thinking how to fix missing base ring.
