I posted this yesterday in the general forum. Im looking at an old Karman Ghia that has the motor pictured installed. Any ideas as to what it may be? Anyone have an interest. I want the car but have no need for the powerplant.

I believe it is a 1600S engine 1960.
Worth a bit of money....

Either a late '59 or early '60 1600 Super based on the 3rd case stamping. The VR on the generator/alternator is wrong but I would hang onto it assuming there's not a rod hanging out of the case and get it checked out. A KG with a 356 engine? That sounds sweet. Wink

You can build a nice VW engine for what a 356 core is worth.

Does the engine run? If not, can you see missing parts such as carbs, manifolds?
1) If it is complete and turns over but doesn't run, I will guess a few grand, or so.
2) If it is complete and runs, roughly double that, maybe more.
3) If it runs really well, and has good compression and leak-down, etc. double again.
If you can buy the car with the engine at a price that is right for you, LHG's comment is right on the money. I will take a SWAG and say that you may be able to sell the engine and have enough to pay for a hopped up VW engine and a rebuilt VW tranny. That is a guess. Good luck, and let us know. TLC

I don't know what you paid for the Ghia, but I bet the engine would repay your cost!

Gee, I hate to be the rain on this gay parade, but I wouldn't be pricing a gold-plated generator on that VW engine just yet.

Between the conspicuous absence of any info on running condition, the obvious tale of the immediate need of a re-build the pictures tell, and the fact that it is a thermo-valve case, I think it is not unreasonable to think that sale may require an oddly motivated buyer to "cash out".

Of course, I also fail to see the value in a clapped out Abarth muffler, so hey; maybe I should attach a grain or two of salt.

Good luck.

Why would a dirty engine need a rebuild? Price-out Porsche engine parts, then come on back.....

PostPosted: Thu Feb 19, 2015 11:30 pm    Post subject: rusty old muffler Reply with quote

James Davies:

Can that rusty old muffler be adapted to a hot rod 912 engine? I'm afraid not. It would be much better on the original '55 1500 cc engine which is all rebuilt and ready to go. I guess the rusty POS won't be too noisy on my 1500 cc engine, and probably better than one of those Dansk ones.

But come on, be honest. Don't you think the rusty POS muffler will make my shiny, rebuilt engine look a little strange?

While there is no way to see inside the muffler, a sand blaster and header paint could make it a decent driver muffler.
If the engine has decent compression and leak down, I would say the right guy who needs an engine in that range would pay $5,000 for it. It could also be an engine that some guy is desperately looking for because it came from the factory in his car. You never know...

Dsrtfox: Thanks. So all that bad looking stuff buffs right our, some quick paint and it looks OK. Who knows what it will sound like?

You name leads me to ask. Did you fight in North Africa? Oh, I get it, you are in the great South west of the U.S. The other night I saw a PBS show on The Rats of Tobruk.
The Aussie outfit was stuck in the sand and the Germans called them rats over the nightly broadcast.
Today the Aussie regiment wears "Rats of Trobuk" on their insignia.

Wasn't the real Desert Fox a German? He was brilliant but on the wrong side, just like our favorite car designer.

Yes, that muffler could buff right out Tom. Perfect for a 1500.

Anyway, a late-'59 616/2 1600 Super is valuable engine to someone who could use it. I'm sure someone will want it for their 356 at the right price. They aren't making these engines any more, and even if the engine is a non-running, the parts are valuable, as mentioned above.

Hey Tom,
I'm not that old but I did fight in Viet Nam in 1969. The desert fox moniker came from racing fox Mustangs in the desert. The spelling "dsrtfox" is the license plate I've been trying for here in Arizona for the last 20 years. Somebody has been sitting on it for longer than that, at 67 I'm thinking the bastard might out live me Smile
