PostPosted: Mon Feb 09, 2015 8:08 pm    Post subject: Dash pod switch functionality help Reply with quote

hi, could someone please explain the functionality of all the switches on a standard split or kdf Beetle car? I looked everywhere for an explanation, but to no avail.

mainly, what do the switches do on the speedometer dash pod? i figured one was the wiper, the other the headlights?

is there a high beam function? only one speed for the wipers?

trying to figure out what extra switches I need to get to make up for any functions that are not available through the stock setup on the dashpod.

thanks in advance!

All you have to do is look at the owners manuals in the Archive section. Here is a page that will help:

so, I noticed that the headlight beam switch is located on the floor a little bit to the left of the clutch pedal?! is that the highbeam switch? wow, that is so cool! You gotta love all the unique aspects of these cars!

to make sure I understand correctly here. The "17" turns the headlights on. The "7" toggles the high beam on or off.

Also, concerning the wiper and dome light. Turning the dashpod switch "14" to the left/right turns on the wipers, then turning it the other way turns on the dome light? So what if you want the dome light on while you are using the wipers? maybe I'm not understanding how it works still.

So there is only one speed for the wipers?

Yes there is only one speed on the wipers: Slow.

Very slow.

I don't use wipers at all. I use Rain-X.

Good point John, that's how I'd always roll in my old Microbus... Wink

thanks again for all the help. Surprised This site is awesome and most of the members are very helpful and welcoming.

I have all of this down par now for when I go in to talk to my local air cooled vw shop over here. Seems all I need to account for now is a fuel gauge (found a nice vintage looking one from Flat4), emergency flasher switch (ideas?), high beam switch, and a washer fluid switch(ideas?).

Sounds like a lot to fit in, but I plan to squeeze it all in someplace that doesnt ruin the beauty of the original dash. Maybe inside the driver's side glove box? Or some switches could be moved below the dash that I don't use often, like my hazard switch.

If someone has the time I would really appreciate a nice picture of the highbeam headlight switch. This switch is foot operated, right? Nice!

One more question that I want to pester you guys with. This might be silly, but I'm just checking to make sure. The original speedometer does light up when the running lights/headlights are on, correct?

Thanks in advance!

But not all. Huh?
Just to get it clear. You ask for all these split and KDF parts and details still with the intention to put all that on and into your modern beetle?
I am willing to help with almost anything but that "project" quite goes against the grain. You will do what you like but I am sure I don´t want to see the result.

right now I just have pages upon pages of research, notes, and and I info on Kdf and Split cars. Deciding all what I can afford and the details that are important to me, while keeping in mind practicality. I'd love to just shell out an assload of cash on a real split, but couldn't afford to keep it or do anything to it after that. I want split window /kdf look, not an actual one. I want a car that's affordable to drive everyday in Japan and that can keep up with the traffic over here. it migh be hard for lots to swallow, but my local air cooled shop understands my intentions.

Should hopefully get the ball rolling on all of this sometime this year! Saving and careful planing. I'm in no hurry, but I think I have about all the info I need now and what exactly I'm doing with my car. all I have officially bought are my fenders and split tail lights.

Oh, yes! bwaaaa haaahaaa! there will be lots of pics when my car is done! lots! and lots! and it will look damn good, i know. yes, it will miss some of details of a true split, of course, but will be pretty bad ass. yes, it will have the bigger windows going around, etc. (unless i can somehow figure something to them look smaller, ideas?)i actually feel sorry for the purists that I will disturb, no harm meant. really. In the Greek mythology there was a kings daughter named Cassandra.
She had the gift to see the future. But a god punished her by arranging that no one ever believed her when she tried to warn when she saw evel coming.
I feel a bit like her when I try to explain to the japanese fellow that he runs open eyed into rubbish.
He will mess up the nice car he has and end with a creature that is just a bad joke. And some day he will realise it and a load of money and work will be just wasted.
