|
|
Hey guys, need a little advice.
I don't have a ton of info to provide yet, but I found a 1969 912 for sale for $6K. It is Blue plate Ca car and said to have the original running motor with ~90K on it. It has been sitting in a garage for at least 10+ years and is currently not registered and on jack stands so as not to have the tires go flat and get ruined. He said he had done the brakes and a lot of interior except the headliner.
Here's the other... He said it has new front fenders, OEM and why, I don't know... He also said the owner before him put flared or turbo fenders on the rear, but needed some work as they don't seem to be centered with the wheels....
I need to see it my self in person (maybe Sunday), but he may bring some phone photos tomorrow.
Does it sound like a hack job? Is $6K still a deal, maybe a flip if worth more?
Any advise appreciated. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

Ha - even sitting on blocks I doubt those tires are any good after 10+ years. Rust is the big killer of all early German cars - the Porsche's unibody being one of worst. If no rust and the engine turns over it would be a good buy. Assuming the new fenders are just spares and not needed on this car - as its usually the floors and not the fenders that go first. Not sure why cost of air cooled Porsches are going up so fast --- and the water cooled 944/924/928 are selling for scrap value almost. _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

Recieved more info this morning, but no pics until tomorrow.
The car was purchased about 15 years ago by the current owner. The right front fender was trashed by the PO and that is why both were replaced with new OG fenders. The brakes were re-done with new OG calipers and rotors. The gas tank has been R&R and re-coated and still yet to have gas put init since work was done 5 years ago. There is no rust in the pan (supposedly), but there was some rust in the front compartment below the windshield but has been fixed as it was surface and nothing deep (has pre-work photos).
There was also some rust in the rearwindow sil, but that was also repaired and was not deep (pre-work photos as well).
He says it is the original drive train with 92K on the odometer. Dual Webbers? It has all new window rubbers that go with the car and all windows are out except the driver and passenger roll-ups. Seats have been redone, door panels and carpet as well.
The rear fenders were cut and the Turbo fenders (steel) were installed, but he said he doens't think they were done right because the tires don't seem to be centered well..... The rear valance was also changed below the tailights as part of the turbo fender kit.....
Any other thought's? Buy or run for $6K _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

Buy It. A complete 912, even in rough shape is worth that asking price. Part of me wants to say it might not be a '69. Quite often when people put flaired fenders on pre- '69 cars, the wheels look like they are offset in the opening. This partly due to the pre-'69 cars having a shorter wheel base (hence SWB vs LWB). Putting LWB flairs on a SWB car makes it look like the wheels are too far forward. There were no factory flairs available before '69 on the SWB cars. |

Interesting. He calls it a 1969, but he did say the exact same thing that the wheels look too far forward. HHHmmmm, so if it is a 68 forget it?
I have a 69 baywindow bus that has a build date of 9/68 (or early bay). Is this the case for the 912 as well? I will hopefully post pics tomorrow and we can figure this out. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

Could you use a 69 and up set of trailing arms to correct the forward looking issue rather than more body work? _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

No matter the year 912, if it is complete and has visible rust buy it. Now if there is no floor and you can see daylight where there should be suspension pan, torsion tube, or rear seats then buy it to part. Not worth the effort to modify trailing arms. |

I don't think I will buy it to part. I either put it together or flip it exactly how I get it.
Hopefully I will get some pics tomorrow. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

Would suggest checking replacements parts prices. I remember that a 912 was at a buddy's shop a couple years ago and I almost fell over when he told me what some of the usual parts were going to cost. _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Yes, some parts are going to be crazy money. I know a local guy with a '67 912 and i was pretty surprised when he told me the cost for some of the parts. _________________ '70 ghia

Still no pics yet. He's been busy all weekend and couldn't show it to me, but I am hoping to see it this week.
Still not sure what to do, but I see them asking good money on ebay for some shells. Number matching and if it runs should bring between 10 and 15K. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

OK I finally go some pics from the owner and found out it is a 1967 and not a 1969. Does that make a difference from a value standpoint?
As you can see he added steel rear flares and the wheels are offset in the well so that would need to be fixed $$$$. He has changed the front valance and the rear has changed as well due to the flared fenders, but he said it is rust free. It also comes with tons of parts to complete including windows and rubber about 90%.
What do think it is worth? Is this a deal at $6K?

If you are looking for a supposed rust-free project and the parts are there to put it back together I would buy it. If you want to go back to early quarter panel and bumpers, there is a market for you to sell what you've got. If word gets out about this car, it will be snatched up very quickly by a flipper. |

Maybe that is what I am hoping. If I could flip it for 8 to 10K. Make me an offer _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

Did you buy it?
I just bought 2 Porsche 912 to restore - a 1967 and 1969. The 1969 is too far gone but I am planning to restore the 1967 (and keep it). |

Didn't buy it. He ended up selling it to someone fairly local for ~$10K.
I could have bought and flipped, but not that hard for money. I would have rather outlawed it and kept it, but other priorities. _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)

So the thing I'm surprised about: You have a 930 in your garage already, why would you want a 912 ? _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank

Sold the 930 and regretted it so I bought a 911 then sold it and regretted it. Found this 912 for $6k and didn't buy it and regret it. Isn't that the way it is with every car, well, almost every. I don't regret that minivan I bought from my first born........ _________________ 2001 ZO6 (450+hp)
