Hi,
I recently moved to Ecuador to do outreach with the indigenous tribes in the amazon basin. In the garage we have a 1971 vw safari (looks just like a thing) 1600 engine. It runs, but needs help. Does it take the same parts as a thing from the US? The body has some rust underneath, but was donated a year ago from Quito, which has a desert climate. No roof or side curtains. But, will try to have them made at a local shop. If you have a blog, or know someone that has knowledge of these vw's, could use all the help I can get, Engine schematics etc. Will place an order when I return to USA for a couple weeks in june, take them back in a suitcase.
Thank You,
Bob |

Welcome!
A Safari Is a Thing... Just named different...
Any Thing part should fit, given you verify the year and configuration...
'71 May have reduction gear boxes at the rear wheels, or maybe even swing axle... Different than the IRS of the U.S. Market Things....
Just make sure you specify the year. Many U.S. suppliers may not have '71 specific parts, or not listed as Thing parts anyway. You'll have to research if the same part was used on another model VW as well(most are type 1(bug) parts)..
Glad to have a Thing on a mission! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

Thanks for the info. I was just about to ask the exact same question. I bought a 1971 Thing in the Dominican Republic last week and now my mission starts. |

Indeed the rear tail lights have been filled in. The driver's side was done pseudo properly, welded shut at least. The passenger's side where you can see the cancer was just done with bondo and piece of sheet metal behind the opening. One more thing on the parts and to do list. |
