Those aren't WolfsburgWest bumpers so keep them clean and waxed. If you didn't already, a nice coat of paint inside will go a long way. Hammerite silver looks pretty good.

POR15 is also a great coating for the back of bumpers.

Raining outside, so I decided to freshen up the oil bath. Had planned to do it this weekend anyhow. Removed the clips and cleaned them up. Spent a few hours prepping for paint, then gave it a few fresh coats. I値l let it dry over night and in to tomorrow, then put it back on. Also mounted my front license plate on the new bumper. Got shipment notices for the amber fog lamps and mounts that I ordered from EISParts.com. Can稚 wait to get them installed, but that will be next weekends project.

Very nice work on the oil bath! Did mine a while back and I spent hours and hours cleaning it and sanding it. Did a number on my nails. What kind of paint did you use? I think mine turned out a little to glossy but it was supposed to be semi-gloss paint.
I'm also going to attempt the speedometer project that you did. The tutorial on your web site makes it look pretty easy. I'm a pretty patient person, so I think I can do it. May drop you a note for advice if I get stuck. My gels are in very bad condition and that looks like the hardest part. I may run out this evening to find the folder material that you used for the gels. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing so much information. |

Love the 68, best year in my opinion. I just bought a 68 and I love the things you have done to yours so far. If you are serious about restoring speedos, you can do mine. I will warn you though, the odometer is trashed. |

Thanks. Just let me know if you need any help or get stuck. It's not so bad once you get the bezel off. If you want to roll back the mileage, that can be a little tricky and test your patience. I used flat black paint that I picked up from Autozone. Can't remember the brand off the top of my head. _________________ Our 1968 Zenith Blue Beetle: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=619501

Depends on how bad it's "trashed". Send me a couple of detailed pics via PM. I'll be more than happy to help you out. Does the odometer work? As long as the gears aren't broken, we can probably get it working for you again. _________________ Our 1968 Zenith Blue Beetle: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=619501

It seems to me that the air cleaners had a somewhat glossy finish. The addition of years of dirt and grime may have given them a flat look. So, glossy is about what you want for period correct.

Didn稚 realize the roof racks were so expensive, prices range from $177 to $269 for the powder coated steel racks from EMPI to $400+ for some other stainless steel brands. I like the racks, I think it値l add a bit of nostalgia to the overall appearance of the Beetle. I ordered mine from Dunebuggywarehouse out of Hamilton, Ohio via Ebay. Hope it値l be here in just a few days!.....I just put on a vintage roof rack on my bug....it looks great...but it whistles and howls at any speeds above 35-40mph...very annoying.

Got the vintage (repo) amber fog lights that I ordered for the Beetle. Just waiting on the bumper bracket mounts that should be here tomorrow or Thursday. I know what I値l be doing Friday night after work! Still need to determine where I'm going to get power for the lights. Directly from the headlights, running lights? Don't know yet.

Don't know about the 68 speedo, but on the 69 speedo there was an empty bulb socket on US models that was for the side marker lights on European models (right by the "20mph" mark on the speedo in your pic here, with the smaller "light" icon:)
If the 68 speedo has the same thing, you could wire those fog lights to activate with the parking (running) lights, and then wire a bulb into that socket so that speedo light will come on when you have them turned on. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

BTW I LOVE how your oil bath cleaner turned out- I need to find one for my 69, I actually have the rare Bowden cable for the flaps inside the cleaner, but they are rarer than hen's teeth- I posted in the "parts whine" thread a link to an ebay auction that just ended, for a 69 air cleaner that had that cable with it, that went for almost $100! _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

I believe there is...this is the back of my '68 speedo...

Very nice! Look forward to seeing them on Mabel. PM'd you about the speedometer. I will be in Morehead a few times in the next month. Maybe we can arrange something then. I'm just not confident enough to do it by myself and my brother says it's over his head. lol |
