PostPosted: Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:02 am    Post subject: 1975 VW Beetle FI Fuel Tank - Will it fit? Reply with quote

Hello everyone, I'm on a fact finding mission and need to know if the 1975 VW Beetle FI fuel tank will fit in the standard Manxter 2+2 dune buggy.
When my build starts I'm going with a Subaru drive train and need a fuel return line.

Can I use a Super Beetle fuel tank or is it a completely different size?

Thanks!

You may already know about it but there's a forum on this specifically for the Manxters

I didn't think that forum was still active. I was trying to ask where there is a lot of traffic.

What is the turn around time they gave you between deposit and when it will be ready for pick up?

Yes a STD Beetle FI fuel tank will fit. A Super Beetle fuel tank will not. It is different dimensions.
You can have someone install another fitting on a Non fuel injection tank. It may be cheaper then buying a fuel injection tank.

The only stock fuel tanks I will recommend are the ones that Wolfsburg West sells. They do not have a tank for fuel injection.

This is the new site www.manxclub.com
I have some of my build/rebuild of my Manxter Dual Sport there.

I am not aware of anyone reproducing the Standard Beetle FI fuel tank. However, I have heard tell that the FI tank has a baffle or some other difference in the tank besides a simple return line - can anyone confirm? I'd rather not cut open my FI tank to find out! Laughing

I'll confirm that digit.

I've got an original std. Beetle EFI tank and it does have a couple of differences from a non-EFI. Namely, the return inlet next to the standard outlet, and inside there is a box-like enclosure around these two ports about 6" square (give or take) and a couple of inches high? It's open on top, and IIRC has small gaps (or other openings) between the box walls and bottom of tank - so it can still draw fuel when it gets below the height of the box walls. A simple small baffle chamber to keep fuel around the pick-up.

I don't have a pick of the internal baffle-box, but here's the bottom of the tank:

Thanks Jeff: you were probably the person the mentioned this on forum before. It's why I tracked down an FI tank for a CIS build.

Just so I know for sure, will the 12 gallon tank fit under the hood of the Manxter kit?

No, It will not fit it is to tall.

If you are looking for a larger fuel tank. Get a hold of Tom of "Tom & Kathleen" he has a custom made Stainless Steel tank in Kathleen's Manxter.
On the Australian Manx Club Gallery site it shows it.
Bruce Meyers Yellow Manxter has the same type of tank made out of aluminum. Both of these tanks were made in the USA.

The tank is actually sold by Turn Key Manx. Brad is on this forum and can help you out with it. They are extremely nice and are 15 gal tanks.

I called and talked to Nate @ TKM because Brad is still in AUS. He actually did tell me they had made them and was supposed to call me back yesterday with some details about making more. I'm Sure he got busy and I'm hoping to hear from him today. He did say 15 gallons and EFI setup so it should be perfect. He also added they were in the process of redoing the website which is why the tank was no longer listed.

Thanks again Tom! I updated info there as well but, TurnKey said they should produce/acquire more of the 15GL tanks. I spoke with Nate today who said he would talk it over with Brad when he gets stateside. I will keep everyone informed when I find something out.

In the thread above, Joecoolcustoms posted some tank modifications to the underside to improve fuel capacity....wouldnt be much more difficult to add an extra port to the underside. If you had the room it would be nice to add some fuel capacity at the same time.

Honestly, it depends on how much this tank from TKM ends up costing me.

Not hi-jacking, but a question about the FI tanks. The purpose of the baffle is ???

My guess is the baffle is there to help prevent the fuel pump running dry and causing a loss of pressure during the normal sloshing around of the fuel. On a carbureted car it wouldn't make much difference. But with FI you could have an immediate loss of power.
