I have a set of four standard Thing wheels.
Right now they are in the treasure chest of my 63 VW Singlecab that is with Fresno James in Kingman AZ.
I plan to get to him 'Thing-a-thon' weekend. March 27th to 29th.
I will be with SoCalBajas and could give them to someone returning to SoCal.
Where are you located? I will find someone close to you, or you could come to Landers and drive your Thing in the Dirt with several others.
I will post info & a pic of this off-road Thing event.
I was using them to see if my 63 singlecab would run cooler with 14" wheels instead of the 15: wheels it has. What fixed the overheating was a Porsche generator pulley, which in 10% smaller in diameter, so I do not really need my old Thing wheels.
Maybe this should have been a PM, but here you are. _________________ 63 singlecab

I found that converting from (front) drum to disc brakes provided so much improvement, I would hate to go back to drums. That's from correctly adjusted front drum brakes to "small" disc brakes that fit inside the stock 14" wheels.
I suggest you think twice about reducing braking ability; maybe 15" non slotted steel wheels that resemble the stock wheels would be a solution.
It certainly would expand your choice of appropriately sized tires, as 14" tires are getting hard to find.
Good luck, Mondshine |

BTW
15" wheels were standard on German things.
If you look in the PDF parts manual the 15" wheel is the same as a bus wheel from 63 and earlier. I have a 63 bus so I can swap wheels.
You could try wide 5 early bus 15" wheels.
They have the correct offset for type 181's _________________ 63 singlecab

I've been wanting to place disc brakes up front in my 1973 Thing, but I know I have to go to 15 inch rims.
CIP appears to have both 4.5 inch as well as 5.5 inch rims, http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D6626.
I need to contact them to see if their front disc brake conversion kit will 'work' with their 15 inch 'wide 5 ' rims, as well as the offset so I can determine the tires to purchase.
My 1973 Thing has 14 inch Thing rims up front, and Bus 14 inch rims in the rear.
Given my recent experience with working with drum brakes, I would keep the front disc, much safer and better braking performance than drum brakes. |

Gads, here in the 'ol USA, the Typ 181 15 inch rims are just about a rare as hens teeth, I have been trying to locate same, as my 'long term' goal is to have my car resemble a Bundesgrenzschutz Typ 181 . . . |

I posted in a previous thread the VW part number for 15" wheels. The are the wide fives to get the correct offset. Here is the pic. Note it has a 211 part number, that is for buses.

A few months ago I spoke to The Thing Shop and they said they were working on refurbishing some stock wheels... making sure they were true and powder coating them. They said it'd be a few month before they were ready. Might be any time now... _________________ '74 Thing [Fritz]

Definitions:
The offset of a wheel is what locates the tire and wheel assembly in relation to the suspension. More specifically, it is the measured distance between the hub mounting surface and the center line of the rim. Below is an explanation of the various types of offsets which are pictured in the above graphic.
Positive Offset- A positive offset occurs when the hub mounting surface is on the street side (the side you see) of the center line of the rim. Most factory rims will have this type of offset.
Zero Offset- When the hub mounting surface is centered within the rim, it is known as a zero offset.
Negative Offset- If the hub mounting surface is on the brake side of the center line of the rim, it is considered a negative offset or "deep dish "
