|
|
...so, on my passenger door ('73 Super), whenever the window is about an inch from being completely rolled up, it gets extremely difficult to roll (almost feels like I am going to break the handle). Any ideas?? |

The best thing to do is to remove the door panel and plastic vapor barrior and lubricate the mechanism in the door. It is called the window regulator. Anything you find associated with the window up and down. It will be smooth as silk when completed. Take an afternoon and do it. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

This thread has some nice info about disassembling the door and lubricating the regulator:

I've done the clean/lube thing on my 1971 VW Convertible every few years (four roll-up windows). Especially because Convertible window regulators are EXPENSIVE, and one of the ones for the rear is no longer available new. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. You'll be surprised how much difference clean and lube can make. I couldn't raise my window at all without grabbing the glass and helping it as I cranked. No new parts, just wiped the gunk off all the moving parts and applied some fresh grease, smooth as can be now. |

Right. If you force it, you'll break the mechanism then you're into a whole new can of worms. I used WD40 initially to break down the old grease and crud. After it was cleared, I used a heavier, but not too heavy white lithium grease (like assembly lube) on the mechanism. _________________ jlex.

It's not that bad Molly. Buy a door panel clip removal tool, under $10, worth it. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. While you're at it, you may want to vacuum out the bottom of the door, clean up as much surface rust as you can and apply some POR-15 at the bottom and new sound deadener material (I used Quick Roof from Home Depot).
Don't forget to replace the vapour barrier. You can cut out new ones from any thicker plastic material you can get at Home Depot or Lowes.
When I did my scrapers I also ordered a bunch of these (see links below from Wolfsburg West) as a few always break when you remove the door card:

Take off the two Phillips screws; one is hidden under plastic and holds the window crank on, the other is under the plastic for the inner door release pull. Put like two layers of masking tape over the paint just above the panel to avoid scratching (like stacked to make wider swatch).
I start at the bottom, use the panel tool too release the clips, and work your way around the door. Once all are released, grab the door-close handle and pull slightly towards you as you lift the panel up and out (the pulling towards you is so the top row of clips doesn't scratch the paint/masking tape).
Then gently peel back plastic moisture barrier and get cleanin' and lubin' !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
