1968 912 Odd Vin # on Door tag???

i have just purchased a 1968 912 and the vin tag seems to have and extra 1 at the start wondering if anyone has any info. as to why ?

That's not the VIN tag it's the Karmann body number and the paint color number. Body or chassis numbers and VIN numbers do not match.

The VIN on this tag should match up with the VIN stamped in the front by the gas tank, the VIN on the plate riveted to the front hood latch panel, and the number on the lower dash. On a '68 they will all match and you will probably also have a hand written VIN on the upper dash. This changed in '69 where they went to a build number stamped on the dash which differs from the VIN.
