I am looking to ship a pretty large piece of exercise equipment from Texas to Mass. Its about 350lbs.

Has anyone ever used a shipper for such a item? Ideas and suggestions are welcome. Some of the current quotes are more than it would cost to ship a car!

I used to do shipping and receiving for a millwork company. I would look into strapping it to a pallet and shipping it Truck freight.

truck freight is where it can save you some money oddly enough.

I like the road trip idea more though.

What's the overnight rental of an unlimited-mileage Uhaul 1/2 ton van? Could be a lot of fun.

2800 mile road trip? Argh!

My commute is 100 roundtrip every day. More driving is not what I am looking to do. I go crazy driving to North Carolina (600 miles) for vacation each year.

uShip.com will get you bids for truck with lift gate & pallet jack. It won't be cheap, but they will get the job done.

I use to import and export wheelchair lifts. They weighed in at around #400 and were tall and narrow. The shipping was around $275.00 from Indiana to Ontario Canada. 500 miles +/-.
I used LTR truck freight most times other time we would pick them up if we could plan something else along the trip.
If you are a one time only, they will rape you on the cost. They can drop it 60% so you can easily negotiate a price.

I do need to go up to Massachusetts really soon, and I may be bringing a car back to Louisiana so I planned to fly up one way.. The logistics could work out, but I suspect Truck freight would still be cheaper than a UHaul rental.

I just shipped an engine that weighed about the same.

Stole a pallet and spent $84 at Home Depot on plywood and screws. It went from San Diego to Minnesota for $184 but that was a wholesale rate.

That's the problem...I don't have the item...I am trying to get it.

I need it on a pallet and either crated, boxed or wrapped. The current seller is hesitant and I don't really blame him.

Its hard to facilitate getting something on a pallet from 1400 miles away.

Not much you can do if the seller doesn't want to box it up. Keep looking around. Maybe you'll find a better deal closer to home.

Actually it looks like we have come to an agreement.

I paid a little for him to pallet and box it, and I found a reasonable shipping quote. Lots of work...hopefully the machine accomplishes what I want it to.

I used to haul a 47' apatche around does that count? Shocked gladd you have come to some sort of agreement. there are somany guys that wont ship stuff it's redickioulas. I did however find a core trans in cali so I didnt have to find, buy and send one across the counter from fl. to rancho trans in cali. I asked the guy how much to send it to them(I was only paying him $50 for the trans) he said he wouldent send it Shocked but he would drop it off there for free on his way to work. now thats how it should work. he could of said another $50 and I would of paid him for it.but he was a good guy with intergity.I think I did pay an extra 20 in the paypal that I dident tell him about.and well worth it.it was there 2 days lator.hell Ive waited 2 weeks for some guys to drop a part in the mail.and some never did drop items.

I shipped an almost complete so42 kit from FL to CA. It went LTL. It was <$100 in supplies. I built the crate, packed it up, and the trucking company just picked it up from my driveway.
