Once you get a set up dual carbs set up and synched correctly they rarely need tweaking. A good linkage helps to keep them there.
I would call up Chico and see what he could do for you. Tell him you are a 71 bus and are looking for some high altitude grunt. |

This is going to be a multi month deal not a week. So renting a r.v is out of the question. Also i thought of buying a pop up camper. But lots of campgrounds in the park dont allow them, cause of bears has to be hard sided. Bummer cause you can camp in a tent lol. |

Hey, if some backyard "artists" can shove a beetle's FI setup into a Brazilian bastard then I'm sure any of those OEM setups could fit in a '71. That would be nice. _________________ Wash your hands

Ya i looked at chico's page and several other builders but there all in California. That shipping has got to hurt to the east coast. Looks like a great product though. How many guys on here are running new vw motors? |

Good point Brian. Maybe the OP could run down to south america and get one of these pretty cheap.
He'd also need some fine electricians to help out with the harness

Nasty.
But in reality, I think a nice stock FI setup would be cool _________________ Wash your hands

You don't "bore" out one of these engines. You buy larger pistons and cylinders to install. You can also change the crank so that it has a longer stroke. These added together produce a bigger engine. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I guess a guy could use a stock 1975-1979 bug engine in his bus. Not sure what would happen if you changed the displacement size and tried to use the stock FI system. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Actually I took a look at this one
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1614749
For the price and the fact that it's been rebuilt I'd give this one some real thought. I'm pretty sure you could bolt it in your bus but not 100% sure. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

not too bad of a price for a "decent" motor.
Only thing I'd be worried about is, I don't think 71 had 'ears' on the transmission and you'd have to use an adapter for the rear of the motor. _________________ Wash your hands

That's right for sure unless by some miracle the case is a universal case with the bolt holes for the mustache bar. Pretty sure that using the adapter would be small potatoes in the scheme of things. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum
