Noticed when driving to uni this morning that my bug has a habit of bogging down/stumbling/hesitating when I apply power at low RPM, i.e when pulling away from the lights or occasionally when coming out of a corner in say 3rd gear. Sometimes it backfires too. When the RPMs increase, the engine runs fine again with no noticeable loss of power. I've recently had the car serviced.
Any thoughts at what could be causing this?

Engine is a 1200 'D', carb is a Solex H30/31PICT, dizzy is a 009.

Is the carburator icing up? Look below the carb at the intake, is it icy?

No, the intake manifold is warm and I've checked previously that the heat risers are functioning.

I would be looking at the idle jet to see if there is a bit of crud in there.

I would check the accel pump, the initial timing, dwell and see if the vac advance is working properly.

Especially if it was good before the service was performed

Timing possibly? What did they do as part of the service? (Willy Mc it's a 009 so no vac advance.)

I have the 009 and h30/31 combo, I was having the same trouble so I put a little more advance and it fixed it.

I loosened the distributor and turned it counter clockwise very slightly - 3mm or so.

I'll try that, thanks! Noticed my coil is quite old too, could this cause similar problems? Just a thought...

If you are getting a good blue/white spark out of it then it's probably fine.
