|
|
Good evening guys and gals! Sick of the leaking rear vent windows and the drafty jalousie, I've set out to convert the rear to all sliders. I was going to use vintage German windows, but finding them for all four rears seems to be a huge challenge, especially considering I've got a RHD which has a left hand slider.
Being a pleased prior Just Kampers customer, I noticed they sold two different versions of these sliding windows. One is OE Brazilian VW, the other is Just Kampers house brand. The OE ones were a bump over $100 more than the JK version, with no real quality benefit so far as I could tell with my conversing with JK - plus CIP1 carries the JK version and they can ship to the US much easier than JK direct. With CIP1's 20% off sale, I was able to get this for about $220 shipped with the seal.
Now, my opinion on the quality - I am definitely pleased and I have no issues with how it is made or what it is made from. I typically only buy vintage OE or USA made parts so springing for a UK made product is a bit out of my comfort zone... but they certainly aren't made in Asia, so I'm satisfied. I will be ordering the other three for my bus.
Time for some photos!
-----
Seal, looks good but quality can't be determined until fitted.
Fully open.
Finish blemish, minor, but I'm going to see what CIP1 has to say. I didn't notice while I was taking the pictures, but it looks like the felt isn't glued straight. If I believe this effects the weather resistance, I will report back after further inspection.
Fully closed.
Inspection sticker.
JK logo on glass and water drains.
Center water drain.
Sealing surface.
Closed latch closeup. Made of plastic, seems stout enough but I'm going to try to order spares to keep around.
Spring loaded and tight.

Get that baby in! I've been thinking about getting a couple sets of the rear ones, for each Bus.
I do have one set for the '73-I scored a set of middle sliding JK windows on the classifieds. I think in the '78 I'd just install the rear windows so I could keep the jalousie windows in the middle.
Anyone else with them, please chime in on your thoughts! I know they are tight to install, but I'd like to see/hear any other thoughts on fit/quality/waterproofness. _________________ Dave Cook

I ordered a couple but got them from bus depot. Only the left and right middles, I'll be making the rear windows solid. Probably won't be installing them until the bus gets painted so I'll be watching here.
I decided to ditch the vent windows when I opened one and it fell out! _________________ -Andy-

These look like a great windows but is there a clever way to add screens to keep the bugs out? |
I'm pretty sure I've seen people making and selling screens that attached with magnets sewn around the perimeter. If you can't find a set being made and sold in the classifieds, a trip to the hardware store an a sewing machine would combine forces to get you the screens you seek.

I put one of these JK sliders on the left rear of our Westfalia. Looks and works great! Sorry, not the best photo of it but the best one I have with me. Probably will try to find one of the magnetic screens to put over it, but the old wing version didn't have a screen either. It had rusted out and had to be replaced.

I'm in. Just ordered the full set for the 69'. Another 800+ for a bus I probably won't drive for a couple of years.
I put late sliders in the middles of the 70' and I've been quite happy with them.
Screens shouldn't be to difficult to create, and much easier than rebuilding jealousies.
Thanks for the heads up on the great price! _________________ 70 Sunroof Kombi

I know you guys are doing your rears but I thought of just doing my one side, on the sliding door with one of these, to replace a leaky flipper window, do they make them for this location? |
That would be.

Thanks guys easy enough for a noob to install? |
Not too bad to install. It fits tight, which is good since you don't want leaking. The cord trick helps:

This is the question.
Does this slider use the oem seal?
If it uses the oem seal can you use the deluxe seal?
Thanks
