Sambanians perhaps you have tuned into my build thread and already know the story. I rushed through my build and it all seems to have worked out. After one coolant hose failure at a T-mobile parking lot in Seattle, and one breakdown due to a loose vacuum hose literally while pulling into the border crossing while driving into Canada things have been pretty smooth.
Currently we are in Crested Butte, Colorado. We put about 5,000 miles on the old girl at this point and have finally gotten around to getting my website / blog / facebook / instagram up. I'll be posting blog updates from time to time, and when the inevitable breakdown that my Bentley won't allow me to fix happens I'll be asking questions.

I wanted to see if there are any VW meet ups along the way, we are heading west towards San Fransisco then down the Coast into Baja. Baja will be around mid April. In the last 5,000 miles outside of Seattle I have seen two Vanagons driving (one I knew they were going to be passing us) and many parked. The only bus I've seen driving was here in Crested Butte!
Eric inherited his 66 from his dad and was proud to be driving it throughout the winter. He and I have the same furnace!
Here's my Girlfriend Tessa and I and the Bus

You should try to meet up with Ben (KombiLife.com) heading the other direction (Chile to Alaska). He is currently in Baja California and should cross into the US soon.
Enjoy your trip and please post often!
Here is one of his threads:

Looks like an awesome trip! I meet Eric last year camping up at Lake Irwin just outside of CB. Real good guy. If you find yourself going through the San Luis Valley send me a pm, there is a small VW club here and I would love to see your bus! _________________ '70 Hardtop Camper 1600 w/ dual kaddies |

We are actually planning on going to Durango to meet up with Busaru (mick) and the Tortuga Plata who is now stationary there (from Alaska). I'm excited to see that town and Silverton, then on to Moab . _________________ 2.2 Suby powered - 75 Westy - Rita

Sounds like fun! My Uncle lives in silverton, he is currently dropping a 1.8T from a golf into his vanagon. Beautiful country out there and good skiing! _________________ '70 Hardtop Camper 1600 w/ dual kaddies |

Awesome.
And awesome bus.
If you happen to be on I-80 towards S.F. and need a hand, tools, beer, rest stop, etc as you come over the lake tahoe area/ Donner summit, our place is yours.
Good luck, will be following your journeys.

Currently in Durango - Heading to Moab.
New blog post about the first leg of the trip. We are figuring out our travel flow still, I'm piloting and trying to get Tessa to write most of the travel blogs but without internet it is hard to update the pictures. We aim to put a new blog post up once a week.

Who is this? Well I'm on the left, Mick from Busaru is on the right. He is the reason I was ever able to finish my conversion. He sells the things you need to complete it, a throttle body reverser, engine carrier and even a dual radiator kit! It was great to meet him in Durango, we went over each others buses as I went with a slightly different design. Check out his youtube videos and boxerswaps website if you would like to be subaru powered _________________ 2.2 Suby powered - 75 Westy - Rita

What is your route to Argentina? I have lived in Suriname and have lots of friends there if you go that way. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

Keep us updated. Your basic design seems good. Let me know what caused that coolant leak (dump) so I can try to avoid it on mine.

Moab was cool, currently in SLC. Fishing is slow
I am not sure of my route to Argentina, likely down the west coast and possibly returning up the East. I may have to pick your brain about Suriname as I don't know anything about it.
The radiator leak was caused by a loose connection. I just didn't tighten it enough I guess. _________________ 2.2 Suby powered - 75 Westy - Rita

Subscribing for updates. The blog is great. It's been 30 years since I was in Crusty Butt, and it doesn't look much different in the photos. |
