| I'm starting to think about navigation and stereo in my '84 vanagon. Curious if anyone has ever done double din, I would love to see some pics, and here some experience. |

This is the nicest DD install I've seen on a van. Requires a re-contour of the dash pad along with a vacuum formed cover over the top. Sweet setup

I think that nice DD was done on the Very nice Syncro Stephan's Auto Haus built a few years back. It was there when I picked up mine. That custom dash was impressive.
I believe someone here posted a nice single din with a DD size screen that comes out. When I upgraded my stereo I remember seeing that option but was concerned about durability. That was 6 years ago and I now wish I would have gone that route. I probably will. |

I dont like motorized, just on function. I like the screen always being available. |

Consider the concept of using a tablet computer with a quality suction cup mount. I use a RAM mount and it is rock solid.
A single wire to a USB plug in the back of the head unit connects audio and power via a wire that I keep stowed in the ashtray when not in use.

I have had a Kenwood KVT-512 with the navigation and bluetooth modules installed for several years. (I don't know if they still make this model or if there is a newer replacement model.) It is indeed motorized, however, you can literally set it up in an infinite number of arrangements including an option with the screen always up at any angle and offset from the face of the dash that you choose. This is what it looks like:
It is a great stereo, fits in a standard DIN slot, plays DVDs, has full screen navigation viewing and has been very reliable for me. I would probably be hesitant to recommend driving over rugged terrain with the screen up, but it is easy to turn the screen off.
Most of the time, I have the screen "parked" because I use the bluetooth setting with my phone for most of my driving. It looks like this when the screen is off:
Anyway, this has been a great solution for me. No modifications are necessary to the dash. The additional modules take up quite a bit of room so I have them hidden behind the glove compartment. This stereo also has an additional camera option which you can install on your back bumper and wire up to display on the screen.

That is a sweet looking double DIN from a single DIN! They don't sell that one anymore but Kenwood has a newer version: KVT-7012BT
1. Do you still like it?
2. Does it tilt back far enough toward the dash to easily see it?
3. Does it dim down enough at night?
I'm leaning this direction, but right now there are no single:double DINs with CarPlay (Apple's newest double DIN interface).

1. Yep. It has been great and no troubles to date.
2. It has settings to adjust both the angle of the screen and the "parked depth". I have it set up with a slight backward tilt and it is almost touching the dash "pad". It would be great if the screen were closer to the windshield but that isn't possible without modifying the dash. The angle really doesn't matter that much to me. A little tilt from vertical suits me fine. It can be tilted back a lot further, but it also has to be "parked" further forward to accommodate the tilt, so it is a trade-off. (If you were to place an ipad type device in front of the dash you would get a feel for the appearance.)
3. It does have a significant dimming range, but honestly while driving I only use the screen display for navigation. So when it is in navigation, I keep it pretty bright. I have thought about adding a backup camera module, but still have not invested in that option.

Just ordered this Kenwood: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UVWC34I?psc=1&...ge_o00_s00 . Will be installing it with a backup camera in a week or two. Unfortunately there isn't any brand currently selling a single DIN dvd with Apple CarPlay.

I love it! I want it! And even have that exact model saved on my "westy" amazon wishlist...
So very cool to see it installed and looking that good! Which only leaves the question... how much of a pain in the ass was it to install? I've read it's install manual, and it didn't seem like it would be an issue with a GW harness (assuming my future van doesn't have some PO nightmare electricals or anything.) But I was a little concerned with it's depth. (and without a van of my own to go and measure... well... you can see why I'm pleased to see it installed in a westy. )
