Ahh! Thanks, that's what I thought might be happening. However to get to said nut on a Campmobile passenger side requires removing icebox unit.

Not worth that, unless you are replacing it. I'm sure the part number is the same.

It is actually my infrared thermometer gun's holster. Driver's side only.

If an Officer pulls you over and sees the gun behind the seat. He may shoot you by accident. His bad but you're still dead.

PostPosted: Thu Mar 12, 2015 12:18 pm    Post subject: Behind the seat Rubber Strap Part# 211 857 817 Reply with quote

Thanks so much to those that have helped so far!!!

To summarize:
Part# 211 857 817 Rubber retaining strap.
Has been found behind Right and Left side seats.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7589266#7589266
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7590126#7590126

Part# 211 857 817 is described in the 68-72 parts manual as:
Retaining Strap- Warning Triangle
from Ch. No. 210 2000 001 (beginning 1970)
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6918342#6918342
With no indication if it is mounted on the left or right of the vehicle? Could have been either side?

This Rubber strap is not to be confused with the White bungee cord behind the left (drivers usa) seat that holds the dash table when not in use.
Bungee cord behind driver seat and other stupid questions

Members have stated. The strap behind the seat on the left (drivers usa). Is for.
"Tool Pouch (bag)"
"Map holder"
"hubcap retainer" (Possibly for the dealer PDI, Pre-Delivery Inspection kit)
"owners kit"
"customs pages and bill of lading"

Any help would be appreciated

I worked at a VW dealership in the mid '70s and got a few busses ready for delivery. Definitely... for holding the tool pouch.

Do you remember seeing anything in the strap on the right (passengers us) side?

Thank You for the info.

No, I don't even recall ever seeing one on the passenger side before this thread.

I remember recently having a discussion about the drivers side strap. I was told is for holding: compactable-folding emergency road triangles. Not sure on how many. I will try to find out more this summer if I see the individual a vw show this year.

Was the tool pouch stowed there until it was moved to under the passengers seat?
Could it have been a travel kit? Something like this.

Mine has been replaced by a nylon bungeeee cord It holds my small table in my westy behind the seat. Think that's there where they originally stored. You know...the table that has the small pole and attaches below the ashtray and ebrake handle. Two slots attached to dash.

TCash..after reading your reply, I had to go out to my 1970 Westy and check, the metal strap under the passenger seat holds the jack and handle and in a lot of cases people often placed the tool kit there, however there is no real way to secure it there. I still think it belongs behind the driver's seat for ease of access. And in response to your question, No.. in my experience
I have not seen anything like that stored there. I have a vintage aftermarket
reflective triangle in a yellow plastic box that is much too large and heavy to be placed in that strap.

This is a lot like the Ghia back seat straps but longer. Here is one for sale. The hook can be had in the Ghia classifieds for those that need them.

Ghia kind:

This is in the 1970 owners manual same for 71. Is this a picture of an older model?
What year did the tool pouch move behind the seat?

No worries, memories aren't what they used to be.
It's not to say that when the vehicles where shipped the tool pouch was not stowed there.
Thank You
