to buy scrap metal? I need 3/16" sheet. I am building a small smoker out of an old compressor and need the 3/16" sheet for the firebox. I could buy a half a sheet but don't want to spend that much ($100 for half sheet) nor do I need that much. Anyone know of a cheap place to buy scrap metal? C&M on federal/hampden only had 1/8" thick in the scrap piles.

I did google it but most results are for places buying scrap.

Also, id be open to just buying 6 square sheets cut down to 13 or 14" square each. If anyone can provide this service, let me know how much for 6 quanitity 3/16" thick 13 or 14" squares. I can weld it all together.

Thanks!

You might consider flat stock (available in widths upto 12" or you could overlap/splice thinner widths to get your desired width). Metal-Distributors in Fort Collins has never steered me wrong: http://metal-distributors.com/

3/16 for a fire box? It's a smoker not a furnace. 1/8" will do fine as long as it can drain.

I ended up using Denco off I25 and I 70. They cut the firebox pieces and I welded it all together. Turned out awesome! And yes, 3/16" steel is what I ended up usig for the firebox. I want this thing to last. Most people use 1/4" steel.

pictures for anyone who is interested.

You know....I hope....that most places who BUY scrap....are buying it to sell it for a profit To re-smelt. Most will happily sell you some of what they have for a profit as well. Just ask. I have never found a scrap metal buyer who would not sell you something simple ....as long as they could just pick it up quick from their yard....and you realize you are not allowed in the yard. Ray

Howdy Nice transformation. Burn off the paint and smoke some meat. Pork, Turkey, Duck (can be wonderful) . Remember its all in the brine. Let it soak.
Oh, and forget jerkey , Low and slow . Wonderful.

low n slow is the name of the game! I have been bbq'ing for a few years now. I also own an overpriced big green egg (bought used for very cheap though) but was looking to try something different. I smoked a few butts, some wings, sausage and ribs on it already. it performs very well.

I did end up finding a scrap yard that allows you to pick from a certain area. I got a lot of the material from them in the end. It was a fun project, Im already looking to do another.
