As we all know the original seat belts that just hang there can be a pain to adjust, and look messy. I've been wondering if I could find something retractable in our local U-Pull-It junkyard that would give me retractable seat belts. Anybody every try this? I have looked at the aftermarket cheap ones on E-bay, but the usual safety concerns weigh on those belts. Something from the Junkyard might be a tougher more reliable belt.

The Mexican Beetle use retractable seatbelts that should bolt in:

1B0857705A (left), 1B0857706A (right). You may need the buckle as well:
BAA857755D. There may be different part numbers for the older (late 70s) beetles which I think used a similar set up.

Some people have retro-fitted GM seatbelts which are almost identical, there are some threads on it.

Here's an image on the seatbelt configuration on the Mexican Beetle:

I also have those Hummer belts in my 1971 Convertible, like them. I have photos in an earlier thread, use the Search function.

I took the originals out and installed the EMPI ones.

Quality as far as I'm concerned.

I installed bmw retractable belts along with my bmw seats. Also found some that fit the back seat too. A key o these is the way they are mounted. The mechanism that "locks" the belt on impact or under stress is a small ball bearing in a little plastic cup. In the wrong position it won't work right.

Cusser advised me on the Hummer seat belts. Do not skimp on the safety item. They do work great and did have to get this bracket.

Do those cip brackets have the small mounting locator pins like the original repa ones did?

Hi
Does anyone know where i could get a new or used left side Mexican seat belt part no 1B0857706A
My inertia reel on mine has frozen and I need an identical replacement urgently.
When I google the part no. its almost zero hits which is unusual.
I'd be really grateful if anyone can help.
Mike

According to this page:

http://autopartmaster.com/en/?action=catalog_show&cat=vw&t_id=118954&id_pic=49688

the left side belt w/ inertia reel was part number 1B0857705A

Do a search for that you get several hits, of course most say out of stock or discontinued. Looks like Bus Depot might be able to get it, don't know:
