Hello my friends,

i have two questions regarding this gearbox.

When i am driving, i can change gear completly normal, but if i stop for some reason and put it in neutral i cant start driving in first or second (the gear dont engage) only in L.

So i am driving with a normal gear box without clutch pedal... i start in L, then i put first then second and on my way... This is normal?

Why cant i put the first gear (or second) and drive normaly... only using second in highway and L in steep hills or heavy Load.... the strange about this is if i stop in First or Second (and dont put it in Neutral) i can start again in that gear.

Other question:

What should i do in heavy traffic? if im in first, should i press the shifter a little in order to engage the clutch, or should i put it in neutral? and then start again (in my case, with L - first - second)?

Sorry, english is not my native language...

Should answer most of your questions. Sounds like yours may need some repair as it doesn't sound quite normal.

I've never driven one - I ended up selling the ghia I owned that had it before even getting it running. But I always thought you were able to just leave it in 1 except highway driving (2). And L was only for going up very steep hills.

We've had multiple AutoStick VW's in the family - no major issues. I used all 3 gears when driving.

Nice looking car!

You should be able to start off in any gear with the AS transmission so what you are seeing is not normal. With that said you will find it tough to get moving if you use 1 or 2 which equates to 3rd and 4th on a manual transmission car. Why your car will not do this might have something to do with a clutch adjustment. As suggested check the VWAR site.

It has been suggested the best way to insure the life of an AS transmission is to run through the gears each time. That is start off in L then shift to 1 and 2. I do this most of the time.

Very nice and clean looking car ....... but one incorrect thing stands out and is a very easy fix. it is the door mirror angle. it should sit more parallel

To fix , simply remove the mirror arm from the base with a 19mm wrench. The base cover will then come off and expose two phillips screws that hold the plate to the door. remove those two screws and flip the plate around and replace in order.

This is what the plate looks like. The threads sit on a offset to match the angle of the door
