Late Super's use this unusual transverse mounting. Notice how the marginally insulated exhaust pipe lays right across the top of the fuel tank.
Is it safe?

Yes, exhaust does not provide a spark, and the flash point of gasoline is very high. Not to mention the metal tank is between it and the gas.
