Glasser and cwat1982, when did you get your buggies on the road and insured?
Last year?
Several years ago?
Local companies are honoring insurance on presently insured buggies but not on new inquiries and good luck if you let insurance lapse... |

I registered/insured last year.
For insurance I had to send in pictures of the buggy, then sign a letter saying I wasn't going to go off-roading with it. Besides that, it was normal process.
Cheers,

I've been away from The Samba for a while. I am extremely upset reading about everyone's experiences and challenges trying to obtain insurance.
I have a "verified by Winnie" Manx without a tag that's been in storage for a few years. Planning on getting it on the road this year.
It would break my heart if I had to sell it (to a caring U.S. buyer) because I can't get insurance.
I'll definitely post my insurance experiences. My plan has always been to keep this as a Street only buggy. |

I have an unfinished Manx copy and am very interested in how "manxbugguy" fares as far as finding insurance in Ontario. Eagerly looking forward to your updates. |

I'd like to hear about anyone's experience when it came time to make a claim on any of these buggy policies. When I hear of fuzzy values put together by actuaries I wonder what happens at crunch time.

I realize this doesn't answer your question but I only intend on having PL/PD coverage so if anything happens to my buggy (assuming I can find reasonably priced insurance in the first place) I'll either be fixing it myself or scrapping it and taking the loss. It's a risk I am willing to take. |

I was hit by a drunk who drove off and if not for a witness, I would have been screwed. On my rail I had liability only. But thanks to my attorney I get new windows for the house and a bunch of neat s$&t for my rail. |

I'm looking at a different direction now because all responses I got were no.
I hear that now in Ontario the side by side - UTV are going to be insured as off road but able to run Ontario roads the same as an ATV.
The argument I'm going to use is all insurance companies are denying because it has the ability to go off road. So insure me as off road side by side. I would be fine with that too.
Wish me luck. |

Good luck, UTVs and ATVs are only allowed to drive along the outer edge of select roads at reduced speeds. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician

Im not concerned about the out of pocket to rebuild the buggy. I'm more concerned about everything else I own.

Is this ACTUALLY happening?!?!?
How can they NOT insure you?

I would give State Farm a call. I received a quote from them back in December. I'm also waiting for a second quote from a broker in the Ottawa area. |

At least I could put some hrs on it. As it is now, I can only drive it illegally |

Why is it that insurance companies can say only if you do not go off-road?
Sounds like a case of dune buggy discrimination. What about the jeeps ,4x4 trucks, Landcruisers and Samurais?
Doesn't make sense to me. We are ok in B.C. with our ICBC gov"t insurance. _________________ My wife said I never listen to her.

My same argument was about that issue but the companies I called turned me down cold. Just because it was a modified VW into a dunebuggy. VW's are not the only ones to get the axe. Hot rods and some performance cars are on the block in Ontario |

I'm really interested in how manxbugguy fares as far as insurance in Ontario goes. My Manx copy is presently unfinished and I am undecided whether I should finish it (with the intent to street drive it) or if I should just part it out and take the loss.
I really don't want to waste any more time or money on something I won't be able to insure so I really want to know what happened with manxbugguy as I am not only in Ontario, I am also in Ajax too.
As mentioned earlier, I am fine with just PL/PD because I am either going to fix it or scrap if it bad things happen, and am more than willing to take the loss.
Edit: I emailed Lant and have not heard back. |

What are you trying to insure? I mean does your ownership say 1968 beetle? Or is it a special construction? I'm in Ontario with an ownership that says 1970 beetle. Will need insurance in about a yr. A friend of mine through Lant has a 1968 beetle ownership for his f/g buggy. |
I have an ownership for my buggy (the donor vehicle) and it's still titled as a 1968 Karmann Ghia. Sure, I can get insurance for a 1968 Karmann Ghia BUT, the real issue is that if I end up in an accident, the insurance co can easily state that what I was driving at the time is NOT a 1968 Karmann Ghia and therefore my policy is void. Also, along those same line, if I do get insurance as a Karmann Ghia (although it's now a Manx clone), even if I don't get in a accident, the cops can pull me over and charge me with fraud for driving something that is clearly not what the ownership states it is.
I either need the ownership to show that it's a dunebuggy or a modified Karmann Ghia. That brings up the issue with getting insurance .... if it's titled as a dunebuggy, apparently no one will insure it, if it's titled as a "modified" whatever, regular insurance won't want to cover it and true modified car insurance (like Hagerty etc) will refuse to insure once they see pics of it and rule that it's actually a dunebuggy.
I've got a couple of options: finish it, part it out, or finish it without the stuff needed for street and just have an off-road only Manx buggy.

Service Ontario told me that I could not change the ownership. If it started as a 58 VW then its always a 58 VW.
The whole insurance fiasco is enough to piss off the "good humor man" |
