Hey guys, I’ve got a 74 Super. I’ve had dual carbs for a while and wanted to get more performance. I was recommended to port and polish the intake and exhaust. We found out they used abrasive material to do it like gritty sand. So I got with my friend that tunes Hondas and we decided to try it ourselves. We got a bag of sandblasting sand and hooked up into the intake and started the car. We had to hold the gas so it would run. He wanted to let the engine suck in the sand through the intake so it would port it out and then push it out the ehxaust so it would port the exhaust manifold.

I was worried that it might cause problems but he figured it’d be OK. After running the car and letting it suck in sand we got about half way through a 25 lb bag. The engine was bucking and kicking and sounding really weird. We stopped and hooked the car back up normal and took off the sand supply. We tried to start it again and it was really hard. Once started it couldn’t idle and kept making weird noises. We took it out and drove it and it started to make scraping and knocking noises.
Help! Can anyone tell me what to do! My buddy only does Hondas so he doesn’t know much about VWs.

It's karma's way of saying that you shouldn't ever try to do anything to A engine of any type, not even put oil in it,have your sister do that.

Trolling perhaps, but some Honda owners are pretty thick.
You must have used your phone to look up this easy performance enhancing procedure, no doubt you still had your phone in your hand while performing it (don't want to miss an important text), lets see the video you took.

Maybe we can have a thread in the General/Chat area for these things? Cause they are funny.

And I really hate to feed into these things on the technical forums. but here is one from the Pony forum.

Quote:

My car was idling like crap the other day so I figured since I just got it, it may have been awhile since anyone changed the oil out. I decided to go ahead and change the oil. I used Mobile 1 synthentic oil like I was reccomended on here. Anyways, I drain out the oil and noticed it was extremely dark and even after 10 minutes of draining, it was still coming out. I decided to go ahead and flush it to make sure all the bad stuff got out. I hooked up the hose, ran water through the engine, started it up and was waiting for the water to come out clean (The engine never went above idle so I was told this would be ok). Anyways, About 3 minutes into this, then engine starts shaking and shuts off. I figured it was all cleaned out so I plugged it up, added the oil and figured I was ready to go. WRONG! The car won't freaking start now. This car has been nothing but trouble for me, I think I am done with it.

I think I will check the local craiglist to see what this non-runnin VW is selling for.
Mr Everett, does this qualify for a humor section?
Gotta luv the fact that here in Calif your barber has to be licensed by the state but the local mechanic/technician does not!!

I got to the end of that post thinking, this just can't be real.
I've heard about running a little bit of powdered detergent down the carb throat of a running engine before, but 12 pounds of blasting sand?

Detergent in an engine?
I always heard that VWs prefer non-detergent oil. Confused

You have to admit, that having the friend be a Honda guy does make it seem more believable.

That reminded me of one of my friends with a '58 Ford pick up with a big Chrome Olds engine it that he had just bought . Another friend told him to put Comet cleaner in his oil to clean the insides
yep it cleaned the insides alright
probably still in the woods in the back 40 of his place now.
another Darwin award candidate

I can't believe anybody would be so dense to pour sand into running engine.
Sounds like what they were doing in the Cash for Clunkers program a few years ago.

cheers
Hank
