PostPosted: Wed Mar 18, 2015 8:35 pm    Post subject: What size tire to run (new) Reply with quote

Hey guys, new to the group. I know this has alreay been asked 100 times. But I've read tons of threads and haven't seen someone answer it to where it helps me specifically.
I just picked up a 63 ghia and I want it to pretty much sit on the ground, static. What tire size should I run? On the stock 15x4.5front 15x5rear I also want to throw the whitewall inserts in the tire so it has to be tall enough to allow that.(if possible)
Thank you and sorry for the repeat question.

Everyone is going to tell you to scour the tire wheel and suspension thread. Go through it and find a car you like and it should have the tire specs.

Having said that, to sit really low you're looking at a 145 tire. That's a really small tire. Look throught the smart car tires for the front and probably a 155 or 165 on the rear.

Let see some pics of your car

Yes lots of useful information in the "Tire, Wheel and Suspension" thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=433753
and particularly here: KG Tire Survey

Portawalls are temporary. They eat themselves up and the tire sidewall too, esp radials. Take a look at some that have a few hundred miles on them. I say a few hundred cause its rare to last a few thousand. Laughing There is a reason they are cheaper than whitewall tires Crying or Very sad

Thanks for the replies guys, my cars just stock right now So no need for picture, but I want to be as low as that patina blue one with the gloss black top (if that helps) I always see it on google images lol.
But I think I'm gonna run a 145 65 on front and 185 55 on the rear,
As far as the portawalls, I had them on my last bug and never had a problem with them.
Wish I remember what size were on it.

145/65R15 on the front are going to make your speedo show 10% faster and 185/55R15 on the rear and going to make your engine run 7% faster. Both of these are more than I would want.

Precisely the same reasons I don't like running low profile tires on stock rims. For a lowered car, I would consider 145R15 in front and 185/65R15 in back. At 24.2 inches and 24.5 inches in diameter, respectively, they are close enough to stock diameter so as to not drastically affect your speedometer or effective gearing. Plus, you could run a 145R15 spare and it would work for either front or back at least for a short distance.

^^^good advice. I have the smart car tires up front, 145/65/15 and 195/60/15 rear. My speedo reads fast (4.7%) and smaller tires in rear (11.7%) raises rpm's. I end up driving pretty slow on the freeway Crying or Very sad 3400 rpms is about 55mph slow.

Looks good going slow Smile

165/80/15 is stock tire size. You probably have a 4 inch rim. I picked up a set of 5 Nankang's 168/80/15 last week for $320 mounted.
You want to stay relatively close to that size, heres a tire calculator to help.
http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php?tires=165-80r15-145-65r15

Old school Cal look cars ran 135's in front. I wouldnt go any smaller.
People run all kinds of sizes...they also run drop spindles/adjustable and narrowed beams up front to make it possible. There are adjustable and dropped spring plates for the rear. Depends on your set up and how much you are willing to do/spend. If you have 60-66 short axles you have more choice in the rear than 67-68's. You may be able to fit a 195 in back, ive seen 205's ... takes more work.

I just vomited in my mouth a little bit. How could someone ruin/do that to a Ghia? Shame.

Not my ghia Laughing. What is so wrong with the car to make you say that? Would about a 3 inch lift from there make you happier?
