I bought a 1954 pocket watch on Ebay for $30 and it keeps nearly perfect time.
I posted on FB about how I had a PTM (Personal Time Monitor) with unlimited data plan (you can look at it as many times as you want for free), simple operating system that never needed updating, completely protected against hackers, and permanently renewable energy system (wind it once a day).
A couple of people actually were momentarily taken in by the joke. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Hmmm... I've got any number of watches, in various states of non-function...
I stopped messing with them, because they're pretty much unnecessary. Everywhere I go in the house, there's a clock within view. Everywhere I go at work, something in-view has a clock on it (computers, phones, etc), or the room has one on the wall. And when I'm not in any of those places, my phone is a clock. So what does one need a watch for? Decoration?
Actually, my old flip-phone finally died, and I got an iphone. The flip-phone was a much better pocket-watch... So I may need to get a battery for one of the old wrist-watches. But it will probably be the dumbest watch I can find in the old junk-drawers.

Haven't worn a wristwatch in 30 years. The last watch I used with any regularity was a pocketwatch but I stopped carrying it when I got a pager.
I wish today's phones were closer to the size and shape of a pocket watch. _________________ Brian

I'm retired, I have no use for one. Well maybe, one that just has the day on it. _________________ Rick

Every few years I pull out my grandads Hamilton 4992B, 24hr dial with hack feature to synchronize to a master clock for bombing runs. He flew B25's for the Marines. I get it serviced and use it for a few months and then I put it away; I spend too much time on construction sites and it would be the last thing I'd want to drop off a scaffold or smash in my pocket. I'd rather reserve that fate for my cell phone. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

I wear a watch every day and have several relatively inexpensive watches, including two wind-ups. I like them because they look nice to me (a Movado I bought on my first credit card out of college, a German A.B. Art I bought shortly after 9/11, a Rotary and the pocket watch). I like small, precise machinery, like model trains and watches. And several of them have a lot of personal significance to me. True, I don't need them to know what time it is, but every time I want to look at something I like, all I have to do is tilt my wrist. I do it dozens of times a day.
But I sure wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on a Rolex or a Breitling or one of those other outrageously expensive watches. I feel now that's crossing the line from "nice to look at", to "look at me! look at me!" _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

If you want a good watch skip the Rolex and Breitlings, Patek Philippe is where it's really at. |

I love the look of some Patek Phillippe watches but I just can't see spending thousands on one. Although they are well made I can't help thinking that a lot of the cost is from the prestige factor. How much can a bunch of gears and springs cost, after all? _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I completely agree. That's what all those ridiculously lowered, non functional cars are all about _________________ Jack Staggs

Yeah, I've never had a stupid amount of money. Probably a good thing. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I'm an Apple guy. There, I said it. I've been an Apple guy since 1991 and have been through all the rough times as well as the good times the company is now having. I've done my fair share of defending what I've always thought was a great product. The Apple watch is another new, possibly groundbreaking product from Apple. I really don't know much about it at this point but in general I'd just like to comment that usually when Apple releases a new product they get a LOT of pushback. For instance, when the iPad came out no one knew if it would be a success or not and there were lots of maxi pad jokes going around.
So, Apple haters, let me ask you a question. Name one computer company that doesn't make an iPad knock off now. You see, they all criticize and then they copy. You can line up 10 smart phones next to each other and it will be hard to pick out the iPhone because none of the other comapnies can be original, like Apple is. Time will tell if the iWatch takes off but I wouldn't be surprised if it does. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

I've seen no serious Apple hate at all
Yeah, pretty much. Mostly I was just trying to illustrate what I've seen as a lot of misgivings when Apple makes a move which always turns into the norm. For instance, the iPad (like I said), and the mouse, and the hard (floppy disc) which was later removed and people said oh, how can they do that? Because it moves us forward. Too many companies out there just doing the copy thing instead of the innovation thing, like Apple does. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum
