There has been a some debate over manifold colour. The manifolds were black, same colour as the tin. If you think about the way Volkswagens were built. Simplicity and production was key, so it would be easier and faster to do all one colour. The quality of the paint was not the greatest and could not withstand the heat, turning flat and eventually gray. With that said, the manifold dose look nice gray against the black tin.

I know I'll get slammed for this, But in my opinion it's common sense. If something simple gets a life of its own, it must be simple.

Here's a link to this very topic in regards to manifold colour. I hope I was helpful.

If you look at my last post in that thread you will see two pictures One is a '56 with 20 miles on it, taken by the new owner in '56. The second is a '53 being assembled on the assembly line in Wolfsburg. The manifold is clearly NOT the same color as the tinware. It is a dark flat grey. In the second picture is appears to be the same shade as the muffler and heater boxes. The heater boxes look to be a little darker than the muffler and manifold but they are definitely not shiny black. Neither of these cars has enough miles on them to have turned shiny black paint into dull flat black as you theorize. The engine in the factory photo has less than 10 minutes on it. It has only been run on a test stand after final assembly.

They were not painted the same color as the tinware. At least not at the time frame that these two pictures were taken. All of the exhaust components were painted a similar color and since the heat risers are part of the exhaust system they painted the manifold with similar flat dark grey paint.

This picture from the 9/1952 Road and track shows a jacketed K on a '52 with around 6000 miles. This manifold is not black either. It is more consistent with the shade in the other two photos. You can clearly see the ignition wire tube clamps which are gloss black which contrast to the color of the manifold where they clamp around the manifold.

Here is a picture from '47 or '48. Clearly not a glossy black manifold.

Thanks Chris - you saved some heart ache, it would make sense that heat risers and manifold are also painted in exhaust spec paint

Thanks,
