Can someone help me? here are two pictures. This is my first bug; 67. The first picture shows some ceramic piece in the back after I gutted the interior. What is this piece called? I'm assuming it's a sound/heat dampener. It's not part of the firewall right? Second picture is of the dashboard. What is the bottom right knob for? Is it the auto choke? The previous owner snipped the wires on it.... No idea what either of these things are. If someone could help that would be great

Hard to say... it's not original. Follow the wires under the hood.

Youre right on this one, it's sound/heat shield.

So that knob isn't original? It isn't the auto choke or anything? The wires are snipped I can't follow it to anything. And the heat shield. Is it ceramic? I want to know its name/what it is so I can replace it.

Not original. Not a choke, last year for choke was 1960 I believe.

I don't think it is ceramic. It's some kind of fiber board... at least mine is...

Looks similar to a gas heater knob. Any holes in the trunk?

It may have been a cheap bypass switch for the failing of another function. If the stock wiper switch broke, a guy could have snuck one speed to the wipers, or parking lights to the bulbs, etc. It's a standard, off the shelf universal fitsemall switch- courtesy of FLAPS.

That's probably it. Whatever it went too has been disconnected so i will probably just pull it out and patch the hole.

Could be hazard warning lights (four way flashers to you guys)? Thought they came stock from '68 but lots of European stuff around this era got fitted with them, my '77 Ford Escort had retro-fitted one just like it.

Some think that if your beetle has a padded dash, it's an engine donor. Some think that if it has push button door handles, it's a boat anchor.

Perfect spot for an accessory lighter, if you want to go that route. (Some people like lighters... some don't care for them).
That's usually where the dealership installed in that location.

examples in these two literature brochures:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/63accessories/page2.jpg

Although depending on how you want to go.. the correct style of knob for 67's lighters is one year only and is a little harder to find than the earlier style. This is how they looked
Most online VW parts places supply this type

It's only just a suggestion, save some trouble/time since you already have a hole there. Smile
